Afrobasket: Cameroon ends Rwanda's dream - by Eurobasket News

Rwanda suffered a 77-81 defeat at hands of Cameroon Sunday afternoon to miss out on a place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing 29th African Basketball Championships (Afrobasket) in Senegal and Tunisia. Rwanda started the game with a clear intent to win and dominated the first quarter 22-18. However, things changed very quickly as Cameroon bounced back to take the second quarter 23-14 to go into half-time break with a 41-36 lead. Moise Mutokambali 's team upped their game after the break and claimed the third quarter narrowly 17-16 before both teams tied 24-all in the last quarter. Led by Kenneth Gasana (195-G-84, college: Boise St.), Rwanda was leading 72-69 going into the final 90 seconds but Hamza Ruhezamihigo (193-F/G-85)'s foul on a Cameroonian player, with just 80 seconds remaining, was the beginning of the collapse for Rwanda as players failed to manage the pressure. Gasana scored the game high 18 points while Adala Moto dropped 17 points for Cameroon. Rwanda had set an ambitious target of at least reaching knock-out stages for the first time in five attempts since their debut in 2007 in Angola. Ranked 64th in FIBA men's global rankings, Rwanda are competing at the 2017 Afrobasket finals on wild card after failing to qualify from Zone V Championship in Egypt early this year.

Nigeria 77- 83 DR Congo: D'Tigers will settle for second spot in Group A - by Eurobasket News

Nigeria lost their final group game at the AfroBasket championship 77-83 against DR Congo and will finish second in group A. DR Congo fought their way back in the contest from the third quarter to steal and run away with the two points on offer. Ikechukwu Diogu (204-C/F-83, college: Arizona St.) scored 21 points to lead the board but his efforts proved to be inadequate. It was the first meeting between the sides and the East Africans needed a win to cement their spot in the next round. Nigeria next face the winner of Group C in the quarter final; which could be either Cameroon or Tunisia. However, D'Tigers will have their eyes on the outcome of the last group game between Mali and Ivory Coast. If the Malians pull a stunning win; with a massive margin to upset the current points difference, then they could knock D'Tigers off the second spot.

Puerto Rican Guard Jared Ruiz (188-G-92) had a great game in the last round for second-ranked Halcones, receiving a Latinbasket.com Liga MB Player of the Week award for round 19.

Ruiz turned to be Halcones' top player in his first season with the team. Jared Ruiz has solid league stats. He is in league's top in points (8th best: 27.5ppg), assists (3rd best: 6.8apg) and averages impressive 1.5bpg and 58.3% FGP.

The second best player in last round's games was 26-year old Venezuelan Eliezer Montano (206-F/C-91) of El Rapido. Montano had a very good evening with a double-double of 26 points and 16 rebounds. Third on the list of top players last round was Honduran guard Alvin Cacho (189-G-87) of Quezaltepeque (#4). Cacho got into 30-points club by scoring exactly 30 points in the last round. He went also for eight rebounds . He was a key player of Quezaltepeque, leading his team to a 101-76 easy win against the lower-ranked Santa Ana (#7, 9-7). Quezaltepeque needs these victories very badly if they think about getting closer to top teams. Their record at this point is 11 victories and 4 lost games. Cacho has a very solid season. In 15 games in El Salvador he scored 16.5ppg. He also has 8.2rpg, 3.8apg, 2.1spg and FGP: 60.1%.

The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

Michael thanks for talking to eurobasket.com. Where are you at the moment and how was your summer?

My summer was good. I was rehabbing and working out. Trying to come back stronger from a minor injury I had.

Was there anything special that you did in Chicago this summer that you hadn't done before in the last years that was especially memorable?

Yes, rehabbing my knee was very challenging to me. This was that first time in my career that I had a major injury. It was very challenging mentally.

Congrats on signing with RETAbet Gipuzkoa BC San Sebastian (Spain-Liga Endesa). You have paid your dues in your first five seasons as a professional with two in Germany and three in Spain in the Leb Gold. Did somebody have to pinch you? Your playing in the best league in Europe.

I' am Very grateful and blessed to get a chance to play in one of the best leagues in the world. My goal was always to be able to play at the highest level possible if I could not play in the NBA.

You stated in our last interview two seasons ago that 'Yes, I believe if I continue my growth as player that I can can not only play in the BBL but any league in Europe'. How vital was your continued belief in your abilities and healthy self confidence as a player that led you to reaching the best league in Europe in Spain?

It was very vital. Confidence is everything. When you truly believe in yourself, you are capable in achieving all your goals.

Before we talk about your current situation let us look back to the last two years. We last spoke in August 2015 as you were commencing on your second season in Spain with Quesos Cerrato de Palencia (Spain-LEB Gold). You won your first title as a professional being Spanish LEB Gold Champion. What do you believe made this team and season so special?

I think we had really good team chemistry. Everybody understood their roles on the team. We all bought in to what the coach was saying and played well together.

With Quesos Cerrato de Palencia (Spain-LEB Gold) you played 30 games averaging 9.8ppg, 6.2rpg, FGP: 60.6%, 3PT: 22.9%, FT: 60.0%. It was your best shooting season as a professional. Do you feel this season's exceptional shooting had more to do with your teammates finding you in the best spots or you simply putting in more work in the lab throughout the season?

I think is was a little bit of both. I just tried to stay aggressive on the court and learned when to pick my spot on the offensive end.

Last season you played with Cafes Candelas Breogan Lugo (Spain-LEB Gold) playing 32 games averaging 10.1ppg, Reb-4 (6.9rpg), 1.5apg, FGP: 58.4%, 3PT: 33.3%, FT: 69.8%. You had another successful season making the playoffs and finishing the regular season in second place. After two winning seasons do you feel like your recent winning genes will transfer over to new team RETAbet Gipuzkoa BC San Sebastian (Spain-Liga Endesa) who won't have it easy coming up from the Leb Gold?

I think it can. We just have to go out and play hard and together. At the end of the day we will give it our all every time we get out on the court. Nothing will be handed to us, but we need to trust the work that we put in.

You stated two years ago in our last interview that after one season in Spain your IQ of the game has developed the most. I really learned how to think the game and know when to be aggressive on offense and defense. How do you feel has your game developed further in the last two seasons?

I think my game has developed well. I have become more of an all around player. I see the game a lot differently and try to contribute in any way possible.

Now heading into this season with RETAbet Gipuzkoa BC San Sebastian (Spain-Liga Endesa) you stated two seasons ago tat „I think my defense and my energy is one ability that I can really use to be successful in Leb gold, As well as any other league I plan to play in'. What else will you need to do to be successful in the best league in Europe?

I think I need to continue to work on my shot. I need to make sure I am reliable shooter when I am open.

Your new team has a lot of size as well as seven players from different nationalities. In the past you played with two other imports, but now it will be crowded. How confident are you that you will be an impact player and not get lost in the mix?

I think I will be able to add something different to the team. We all have different characteristics that can help the team win.

This season you will be playing against the best talent in the world each weekend as well as against top teams with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona and battle against ex NBA players like Anthony Randolph, Jeffery Taylor, and Kevin Seraphin just to name a few. When you look back at the last five years have you been having a Cinderella career that now is rewarding you with all the countless hours of work you have put in to get this far?

I guess you can say that. It has been a long journey, but the work that I put in has paid off.

Do you still have contact to ex coach Igor Krizanovic? Do you feel like he is a guy that now might be boasting 'I always knew Michael Fakuade had the game to reach the best league in Spain' or did he already have that confidence in you in the 2013-2014 season when you were his player?

The funny thing is I think Igor always had confidence in me. The reason I say that is because he used to yell at me all the time. I believe when a coach is on you that much he sees something in you. Well at least I hope that was the reason.

If you had to construct your own NBA Rushmore which 4 heads would you chose?

Jordan, Bird, Magic and Lebron

Lebron James failed to win his fourth NBA title and is still three away from Michael Jordan. Where does Lebron stand right now in your opinion in the never ending debate of who is the best of all-time?

I think he is still one of the greatest of all time. His career is not over yet. So he just needs to continue to play at a high level.

There has been criticism of Russell Westbrook to be focusing more on rebounding to help inflate his stats and possibilities of getting triple doubles instead of focusing on his defensive assignments. Do you feel that this is a fair assessment to the player Russell Westbrook?

It's tough to say, because he is trying his best to win. He just needs to find a balance of doing the just enough to put his team in the best position to win.

How do you summarize the 2017 NBA Draft. What sleepers do you see playing a role in the NBA?

The NBA draft was very underrated in my opinion. It was a lot good players in the entire draft. I believe Malik Monk will be one of those guys people wish they would have took earlier.

Where will the journey of the Houston Rockets go this season with Chris Paul and James Harden in the back court. Do they have enough to make a serious run at the title or is something missing?

The Rockets has always been a very good team. The Chris Paul trade makes them even better. I just don't think it's a enough to compete with the Warriors.

How do you rate the Kyrie Irving-Isaiah Thomas trade? Who got the better deal and which team will profit better in the long run?

It was a good trade for both players. I think not players will benefit from a different environment. At the end of the day Lebron is still the main factor. Anybody that plays with him will have a chance to be better off in the long run.

What was the last movie that you saw?

Atomic blonde.

Thanks Michael for the chat.

As a rookie he played with ES Chalon-Sur-Saone (France-ProA) playing 36 games averaging 6.9ppg, 3.2rpg, 1.4apg, FGP: 38.9%, 3PT: 38.6%, FT: 82.8%;In the FIBA Europe Cup he played 19 games averaging 10.1ppg, 3.8rpg, 2.3apg, FGP: 55.0%, 3PT: 51.1%, FT: 50.0%. He spoke to eurobasket while playing a tournament in Frankfurt Germany against the Fraport Skyliners and Telekom Baskets Bonn

Tyler thanks for talking to eurobasket.com. Welcome to Germany. Your in Frankfurt playing exhibition games against Frankfurt and Bonn. You didn't play against German teams in France or Greece. Have you ever been in Germany before or played here?

I have been in Germany before. We traveled through Frankfurt a number of times in my rookie season with Chalon. I also visited last season as my friend Brian Sullivan who was my teammate at Davidson was playing with the Hebeisen White Wings.

You won a thriller against the Fraport Skyliners 86-85 on Paris Lee free throws. That was a wild end. What was the wildest game that you ever played in at the college or professional level?

The most wild game that I played in college was when we beat La Salle in a conference game where we were down by 18 and won on a buzzer beater. As a professional my most wild game was when we were playing Le Mans at home with Chalon and won on a buzzer beater alley-op from out of bounds from Illian Evtimov to Devin Booker

As a rookie two seasons ago you played with Chalon that lost a heart breaker at home to Varese. You then watched Frankfurt win the 2016 Fiba Europe Cup final. What memories did you have of Frankfurt then and what was your impression of them today?

I don't have too much memories of Frankfurt at the 2016 Fiba Europe Cup final 4 in Chalon except that they were well coached and executed well. I saw a bit of the same in Frankfurt this weekend. They executed very well and were never out of the game and came back and almost won. They were a very good team that was well coached.

Your playing your third professional season and first in Belgium with the Antwerpen Giants. After two solid seasons in France and Greece, what are your goals as a player besides winning in your third professional season?

After not winning a title as a rookie and not making the playoffs in Greece, my main goal is to win a championship. Personally I just want to get better and continue to grow as a player. I want to take little steps and never become stagnant.

Antwerpen has a very talented team with some skilled Americans with veterans Jason Clark and Dave Dubzinski, rookie Paris Lee and many talented Belgium players. Where do you see being your role? Clark is the team leader. What do you see yourself giving the team?

I think my shooting will help us spread the defense and I will be able to give my teammates open looks. I am also one of the players that does the important things on the court that people don't always recognize like rebounding and passing.

When looking at your game your shooting obviously stands out as you shot 48% and 42% in your last two seasons at Davidson. But you also have other qualities. How do you prove on the court best that you aren't a one-dimensional player?

I can see how people can feel that I could be a one-dimensional player. People simply overlook my rebounding and making the extra pass. People just see me as a shooter, but I give so much more to the game.

Last season you played with Michael Stockton with AS Apollon Patras (Greece-A1) playing 25 games averaging 10.8ppg, 4.9rpg, 1.6apg, FGP: 56.1%, 3PT: 33.6%, FT: 78.7%. Did any of his dad and NBA stories wet your appetite for giving the NBA another shot?

Mike is a great guy and it was nice being teammates with him last season in Greece. Every player wants to play at the highest level and playing in the NBA has always been a goal of mine. I just want to keep getting better and push to reach my goal. I hung out a lot with Mike and he gets asked a lot about his dad and he told stories, but I didn't push him too much to talk about his dad.

As a rookie you played for Chalon in France. You were teammates with one of my favorite guys that I covered in Frankfurt 10 years ago with Ilian Evtimov who played at North Carolina State. How did he help you best in your rookie year?

Evtimov was a great leader. He taught me many of the important little things about being a professional. He is the type of player that plays the game in a smart way. He taught me reads and just to conduct me in a professional way. He was a good mentor for me as a rookie.

After the 2015-2016 season David Micheau was drafted, Devin Booker was one f the best centers in the Pro A and John Roberson led Chalon the next year to the Pro A title. How did all this talent enrich your game?

Their different skill set and their experience of what they have seen and where they have been really taught me a lot about how important work ethic is. Their games helped my game evolve further as a rookie.

After coming out of Davidson you played NBA Summer League with the Miami Heat. Dan Green of the Miami heat said you could be a 14th or 15th guy on an NBA team. You stated '"It's a game of chess, of making the right moves. You never know what is going to be the right decision'. When looking back at the last few years do you feel like you should maybe have stayed in the states and seen what could of happened?

I am content with taking the route to Europe. I have no regrets. I don't dwell about what could have happened had I stayed in the States. I am happy with my decision.

There have been numerous examples of guys coming to the NBA late like a Malcolm Delaney who played at Chalon a few years before you of a Brian Roberts. Are you content with staying in Europe forever or are you leaving a side door open?

The side door is big. My dream is to play in the NBA, but everyone's route is different. Ultimately my end goal is the NBA and I hope that my route will take me there.

You played four years at Davidson. Do you feel like your game and approach of playing the game was effected by how Steph Curry's career had developed in the NBA or has the rise of Curry of becoming one of the best players in the world not effect you as you were at Davidson and beyond?

It wasn't much on my mind. The great thing about playing basketball at Davidson is that you get better each season. No matter what level you came from, you just get better at Davidson. It has shown with Steph Curry as he got better at Davidson and has continued to get better in the NBA. I worked the best I could at Davidson to get better and I thought I got the best out of that experience at Davidson.

Your ex Davidson teammate Demon Brooks was impressed by the way Steph Curry held himself in 2011 when he went back to Davidson to finish his classes. What memories do you have of that as you were a freshman?

I remember Steph Curry coming back and playing pick-up basketball with us. I remember guarding him in pick up. As a freshman coming in this was a very cool experience for me. For Curry to come back to school and finish his classes just shows what kind of guy he is to have taken that step.

How excited are you to be playing against your ex teammate Jack Gibbs. He averaged an unbelievable 23ppg in his last two seasons. If he had played at North Carolina or Duke would he have been drafted?

I am very excited that he is playing in the same country as me and am looking forward to be playing him this season. He is a great player and put up great stats at Davidson. He had a great opportunity in the NBA Summer League and it just didn't work out for him. There are a lot of what if's had he played at North Carolina or Duke that he would have been drafted.

You come from an unbelievable athletic family as Scott Kalinoski played football at Purdue; uncle Dave Ford played baseball for the Baltimore Orioles; grandfather Ron Ward played hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs; aunt Pamela Kalinoski won four NCAA soccer championships with North Carolina alongside Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly; and another grandfather, Ken Kalinoski, ran track at Ohio State. How do you feel has the family roots helped shape who you have become on and off the court?

Having these family roots has been a big help being raised by unbelievable parents and being around unbelievable relatives. They taught me to always work hard and that you need good work ethic in sport and life. They taught me that if you want to reach your goals, you always have to work hard. I have always worked hard for everything I have gotten.

Your ex teammate Brooks said this about head coach Bob Mckillop 'There is no better coach in the world. He is the reason why I am here today. From the time I stepped foot on Davidson he prepared me for this journey on and off the court. One of the many lesson that stays with me is with freedom comes from responsibility. This is one lesson, especially playing professional basketball in Europe, that is very important for a player to abide if you want to have a long promising career. How did he groom and prepare you best for a professional basketball career?

I agree with what Demon said. He is the best coach in the world. He always stressed to us that you have to get a little better each day. He brought so much toughness to practice and that translated over to what I could do on the court and in life. That toughness really affected me and I wouldn't be where I am today without him.

Who won a one on one in practice you or Jack Gibbs?

I always won. I can't remember a time that he beat me.

Who was the toughest player that you battled ever that is in the NBA now?

I get asked this a lot, but it is hard to answer because there have been so many great players that I played against in the NCAA. I just can't chose one.

If you had to construct your own NBA Rushmore which 4 heads would you chose?

Lebron, Kobe, Jordan and Kyrie Irving

Lebron James failed to win his fourth NBA title and is still three away from Michael Jordan. Where does Lebron stand right now in your opinion in the never ending debate of who is the best of all-time?

I am such a Lebron fan. I didn't get to watch too much of Michael Jordan because I was too young. In my eyes Lebron is the best to have played the game. He doesn't have as many rings as Jordan, but he has done so much with every team he he has played with. It is just unbelievable what he has done.

There has been criticism of Russell Westbrook to be focusing more on rebounding to help inflate his stats and possibilities of getting triple doubles instead of focusing on his defensive assignments. Do you feel that this is a fair assessment to the player Russell Westbrook?

It isn't a fair assessment of Russel Westbrook. He is such an unbelievable competitor that just wants to win each game, not try to inflate his stats.

How do you summarize the 2017 NBA Draft. What sleepers do you see playing a role in the NBA?

I didn't pay too much attention to this years draft, but I think that Lauri Markkanan of Finland will be really good. I really like his game.

Where will the journey of the Houston Rockets go this season with Chris Paul and James Harden in the back court. Do they have enough to make a serious run at the title or is something missing?

That backcourt of Harden and Paul is tough. It will be interesting to see how they will mesh together. The Golden State Warriors are too tough for the Rockets and have that battle won.

How do you rate the Kyrie Irving-Isaiah Thomas trade? Who got the better deal and which team will profit better in the long run?

I think in the long term that Boston has the better of the deal. Irving and Hayward will stay there for a while while with the Cavs your not 100% sure if Lebron will stay. But at face value, the Cavs got the better of the deal.

What was the last movie that you saw?

The TV series Power.

Thanks Tyler for the chat.

De Ocampo goes to Meralco - by Eurobasket News

TNT KaTropa has started rebuilding for the future. In an effort to boost their stock seven weeks before the 2017 PBA Rookie Draft, the KaTropa traded veteran big man Ranidel deOcampo (197-F-81) to the Phoenix Fuel Masters in a multi-player trade that also involved the Meralco Bolts. In return, Phoenix parted ways with center Norberto Torres (198-F-90) and a 2017 first round draft pick it acquired from the San Miguel Beermen in a previous trade. Apparently, Phoenix was just a stopover for De Ocampo, who has won several championships with TNT. The Fuel Masters then dealt De Ocampo to Meralco in exchange for Justin Chua and the Bolts' 2017 first round draft pick. Phoenix completed the deals by shipping Chua to TNT in exchange for a second round pick in the 2019 Rookie Draft.

However, things changed very quickly as Cameroon bounced back to take the second quarter 23-14 to go into half-time break with a 41-36 lead.

Mithra Castors Braine defeats ZVVZ USK Praha on second day of BSCA Take-Off Trophy - by Bert Larsimont

Mithra Castors Braine vs. ZVVZ USK Praha: 76-70
Score evolution: 18-19, 32-36, 54-55 and 76-70.

Very few fans and supporters showed up at the Spiroudome in Charleroi, Belgium on Sep. 9th, 2017. The game between Mithra Castors Braine and 2015 EuroLeague champion ZVVZ USK Praha was nevertheless of high quality. The Czech team has been in reconstruction since two of the main players Laia Palau (177-G-79) and Sonja Petrovic (189-F-89, agency: ProDep Management) decided to leave Prague last summer. Two new excellent Spanish players have come to reinforce the USK squad: Marta Xargay Casademont (181-PG-90) and Leticia Romero (173-G-95, college: Florida St.). In the first and second quarters, the Castorettes remained close and the Czech visitors of Head Coach Natalia Hejkova could not really dig a gap. Only at the end of the second quarter, Katerina Elhotova (180-SG-89) had two clutch plays to put her team on top by 4 points at the half! Previous to that, young Belgian talent Maxuella Lisowa-Mbaka (178-PF-01) had missed two free-throws, therefore also missing a chance for Mithra Castors Braine to tie the game. USK center of Croatia Marija Rezan (198-C-89) had been well present and efficient in the paint during the first half.

Marta Xargay, Alena Hanusova (190-F/C-91), Karolina Elhotova (182-F-92), Katerina Elhotova and Marija Rezan made some great efforts in order to dig a larger gap but it was without counting on the great fighting spirit of Castorettes like Britney Jones (172-G-87, college: UAB, agency: LBM Management), Marjorie Carpreaux (165-PG-87, agency: LBM Management), Maxuella Lisowa, Anete Steinberga (190-C-90, college: UTEP, agency: LBM Management) and Olesia Malashenko (191-PF-91, agency: LBM Management). The Castorettes eventually took the lead at 63-62 in the third quarter. They managed to stay well in the race and, with a very efficient Merike Anderson (180-G-81, agency: LBM Management) and Olesia Malashenko in offense, secured the win in the fourth quarter. A second win in a row for Mithra Castors Braine against a FIBA EuroLeague powerhouse in the pre-season!

Toliver's shooting lifts Mystics to 82-68 win over Liberty - by Eurobasket News

Kristi Toliver (5'7''-PG-87, college: Maryland) admitted that she was nervous before the game for the first time she could remember. Those nerves went away quickly as the Mystics guard scored 32 points, hitting a WNBA playoff-record nine 3-pointers, to lead Washington to an 82-68 victory over the New York Liberty on Sunday. "I can't remember the last time I was physically that nervous where my heart was pounding," Toliver said. "To me it affirmed how excited I was for this opportunity to play at Madison Square Garden in a playoff game." Toliver came to Washington in the offseason as a free agent hoping to lead the Mystics back to the postseason and beyond. She helped Los Angeles win a title last year. "This is why we're here. We knew we were capable," Toliver said. "Everyone's buying in offensively and defensively. Everyone's understanding their roles. When you're good at it, anything can happen." The Mystics will face Minnesota in the best-of-five semifinals, starting Tuesday night in Minneapolis. "They are a phenomenal teams, been to the finals so many times," said Elena Delle Donne (6'5''-G/F-89, college: Delaware), who had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Mystics. "They've got so many heads to the snake. We'll watch a lot of film. We'll enjoy this for a little bit." This is as far as the Mystics have gone in the playoffs since 2002 - the last time they made it out of the opening round of the postseason. Washington found itself down 14 points in the first half before rallying to 41-35 at the break. Then Toliver took over. She scored 16 points in the third quarter, hitting all four of her 3-pointers in the period. She could only shrug and smile as the fourth one went in to give the Mystics a 57-46 advantage with 2:48 left in the third. She set the Mystics franchise record for points in a game by the end of the third quarter. That 3-pointer, her eighth, also broke the previous WNBA record for 3-pointers made in a playoff game. "Madison Square is where stars shine and I was lucky enough to be put in a position to be able to do that. I was going to let it fly today," Toliver said. "I don't think I shot that many 3's in a game. That's why I'm here." New York could never recover. The Liberty were led by Tina Charles (6'4''-C-88, college: Connecticut), who had 18 points. It's the second consecutive season that New York was a three-seed and lost its first postseason game. "It's disappointing that we're not getting over the hump," Charles said. "You wish you could have boxed out or made that extra pass or not made that turnover. You always have those thoughts."

Connecticut, down 84-81, grabbed an offensive rebound and Shekinna Stricklen (6'2''-G/F-90, college: Tennessee) was fouled with 11.4 seconds left but she missed two free throws. Phoenix's Camille Little (6'2''-F/G-85, college: N.Carolina) grabbed the rebound and she made two free throws for a two-possession lead. Currie and Mitchell each added 12 points for Phoenix.
