Melbourne United win 2017 NBL Blitz - by Eurobasket News

CAIRNS have rained on Brisbane's parade with a 102-90 victory in Melbourne to deny the Bullets the 2017 NBL Blitz title. Brisbane were in the box seat to claim the pre-season tournament after convincing wins over Sydney and Adelaide. The Bullets were four points clear in the standings heading into the final day on Sunday with teams awarded three points for a win and a point for every quarter won over the four-day event. However, the previously winless Taipans played the role of spoilers to perfection with a sharpshooting 12-point win over Brisbane at Werribee. Brisbane led 24-23 at quarter-time but the Snakes put the foot down in the second quarter and took a 53-46 buffer into halftime. Cairns went on with the job in the third quarter and opened up a 12-point advantage by the last change. The win allowed Melbourne United and Illawarra to surge past Brisbane in the standings. United smashed Perth 93-67 while the Hawks easily beat Sydney 96-80 to finish on 14 points, half a point ahead of Brisbane in third. Melbourne were handed the Loggins-Bruton Cup as United had a superior for-and-against compared with Illawarra. The Bullets did not leave empty-handed as US import Travis Trice (183-PG-93, college: Michigan St.) won the Ray Borner Medal for the tournament MVP. Trice had 16 points, five assists and seven rebounds in the win over Sydney and backed it up with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists against the 36ers. The livewire point guard rounded out his Blitz tournament with 15 points, three rebounds and a steal against his old side yesterday. Bullets coach Andrej Lemanis said his side was 'exposed'' in defence against the Taipans who hit 62.5 per cent of their field-goal attempts. But overall, the tournament produced more positive than negatives with valuable court time for younger members of the squad and quality time together as a squad on the road. 'It's been good for us in terms of the stuff we are trying to grow. We got a lot of things done that we wanted,'' Lemanis said. Cairns captain Cameron Gliddon (196-G/F-89, college: Concordia Irvine) (24 points), Michael Carrera (196-SF-93, college: S.Carolina) (26 points, four rebounds), Mitchell McCarron (191-G-92, college: Metro St.) (13 points, three assists) and Alexander Loughton (206-F/C-83, college: ODU) (12 points, three rebounds) were the chief architects of the win for the Taipans. It was the first NBL pre-season tournament since 1987 where no team went undefeated and no team went without a victory, underlining how tight the competition should be in the 2017-18 regular season.

Mitchel Gorremans claims Belgian Top Division I weekly honour - by Eurobasket News

Experienced Mitchel Gorremans (191-F/G-85) put on an amazing game in the last round for league's leader Soba and that's him to receive a Eurobasket.com Top Division I Player of the Week award for round 2.
The 32-year old swingman had the game-high 21 points adding nine rebounds and four assists for Soba in his team's victory, helping them to edge out Ninane (#5, 1-1) 82-79. It allowed Soba to jump to the first place in the Belgian Top Division I. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Soba won both games without losing any. It's too early to say anything as the standings can be changed completely after next round. It's Gorremans' second year at Soba and it's hard to imagine this team without him.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 28-year old forward Bart Maesen (198-F-89) of Houthalen. Maesen impressed basketball fans with 30 points and 7 rebounds. Bad luck as Houthalen lost that game 83-92 to Melsele (1-1). The season is still at the very beginning and this lost game may not be such crucial, of course if they start win the games. Let's wait for the next round. Maesen is one of the most experienced players at Houthalen and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 24.0ppg (#1). He also registered 5.5 boards per game.

The third best performed player last round was Nick Celis (196-G-88) of Oxaco (#12). Celis showcased his all-around game by recording 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the last round. Despite Celis' great performance Oxaco lost 62-81 to Ieper (#6, 1-1). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. Oxaco can only dream about fighting for top spots in the league. They have awful season losing so far all 1 games. Too bad for Celis he does not play for a better team. But maybe if he did, his season stats would not be that high. The season just started for Celis as he played only first game. But it already looks like he can be team's leader.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Sigfredo Casero-Ortiz (185-PG-97) of Spirou B - 22 points
5. Thomas Lamot (190-F-87) of Melsele - 17 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists
6. Anthony Vermeersch (202-C-90) of Gembo BBC - 19 points and 6 rebounds
7. Aaron Van Vooren (200-C/F-94) of Waregem - 13 points and 10 rebounds
8. Ivan Perez (185-PG-90) of Melsele - 23 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists
9. Xavier Colette (185-PG-85) of Ninane - 21 points and 2 assists
10. Anthony Goetgeluck (182-PG-92) of Soba - 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

Alex Garcia claims Brazilian Paulista weekly honour - by Eurobasket News

Experienced International Guard Alex Garcia (191-G-80, agency: Interperformances) had an amazing evening in the last round for Bauru and that's him to receive a Latinbasket.com Paulista Player of the Week award for round 6.
The 37-year old guard had a double-double of 28 points and thirteen rebounds, while his team was edged out by Franca (#1, 8-1) 65-64. Bauru moved-up to the 6th position in Brazilian Paulista. Bauru is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. But it was their 5th lost game this season out of 9 games. In the team's last game Garcia had a remarkable six three-pointers out of 10 attempts. He has many years of experience at Bauru, through which he has constantly improved. Alex Garcia averages just after two games 19.5ppg, 7.5rpg and 4.5apg.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was another Bauru's star - young swingman Gabriel Galvanini (203-G/F-98). Galvanini impressed basketball fans with 21 points and 6 rebounds. Of course together with Garcia he helped Bauru with another comfortable win outscoring slightly lower-ranked America (#7, 2-6) 104-81. Despite this victory Bauru slide down in the standings to 6th position. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 4-5 record. Galvanini is one of the most experienced players at Bauru and similarly like Alex Garcia has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

The third best performed player last round was another Bauru's star - international forward Renan Lenz (206-F-90). Lenz scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He was another key player of Bauru, helping his team with a 104-81 easy win against slightly lower-ranked America (#7, 2-6). The chances of Bauru ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 5 games, recording just four victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Lenz could help Bauru to bring them higher in the standings. Lenz has a very solid season. In 5 games in Brazil he scored 11.6ppg.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Luiz Paulo Dos Santos (210-F/C-89) of Osasco B. - 22 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists
5. Lucao Moraes (210-C-94) of L.Sorocaba - 17 points and 6 rebounds
6. Marcus Vinicius Toledo (201-F-86) of Pinheiros - 18 points and 5 rebounds
7. Dontrell Brite (175-PG) of L.Sorocaba - 4 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists
8. William Drudi (206-F/C-81) of Osasco B. - 14 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists
9. Victor Camilo (203-F/C-97) of Paulistano - 17 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists
10. Tyrone Curnell (203-F-88) of Mogi - 8 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists

Edwin talks about Hurricane Irma - by David Edole

On Friday, Deon Edwin (190-G-92, college: Kent St., agency: Interperformances), 24, got a call from his brother in the British Virgin Islands.
Edwin, who graduated from Kent State University in June, learned the basics: All of his family who lives there his mom, brother, cousin and uncle are OK. But Hurricane Irma destroyed their houses and the island.
The phone call lasted all of two minutes as others clamored to call their loved ones with the limited WiFi the island could provide.
That was three days ago.
It's still sad and it still hits me hard, because that's home for me, Edwin said on Monday. I'm still kind of waiting to hear back from my brother. At least I know everybody's OK now it's just trying to come together as a community.
Edwin lived in the Virgin Islands until 2009. The crystal blue waters and lush greenery that he remembers are nowhere to be found in photos of the island today.
Instead, photos of his home country show people sleeping in their cars or in houses with no roofs, greenery strewn in every direction and thousands of buildings destroyed.
"It was like a paradise," Edwin said. "I've seen pictures of a third world country, and now it looks like that."
Edwin said no one can leave or enter the country because Irma destroyed the ports and airport as well.
He plans to send money to the family as soon as mail services resume.

Duran's double-double lands him Liga MB Player of the Week award - by Eurobasket News

28-year old guard Cliff Duran (191-G-89, agency: Paris Global Sports) had an amazing evening in the last round for second-ranked Halcones and receives a Latinbasket.com Liga MB Player of the Week award for round 21.
He had a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds, while his team beat Quezaltepeque (#3, 12-5) 90-78. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Halcones maintains the 2nd position in Salvadorean Liga MB. They are still close to the very top. Halcones would have been even better if they kept winning the games like in the last round. They have a solid 13-3 record. In the team's last game Duran had a remarkable 61.1% from 2-point range. He turned to be Halcones' top player in his first season with the team. Cliff Duran averages this season 22.8ppg, 8.8rpg and 6.8apg.

Second best performed player last round was Osmel Oliva (178-PG-87) of El Rapido. He is Cuban guard in his first season at El Rapido. In the last game Oliva recorded impressive 32 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists. Of course he led El Rapido to another comfortable win 94-78 over slightly lower-ranked Arcense (#10, 3-10) being unquestionably team leader. El Rapido's 8th position in the standings has not changed. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 8-9 record. Oliva is a newcomer at El Rapido and quickly became one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 25.9ppg (#9). His other stats are also decent: 4.3rpg and 6.2apg.

Third place about best performers goes to guard Joshua White (191-G-88) of 11 Lobos (#12). White got into 30-points club by scoring 31 points in the last round. He went also for thirteen rebounds and six assists. Despite White's great performance 11 Lobos lost 86-90 to the higher-ranked Cojute (#9, 8-9). But his team cannot count on just a single shooter as he also needs help of the other teammates. 11 Lobos can only dream about fighting for top spots in the league. They have rather bad season and 2-14 record places them close to the bottom of the standings. Too bad for White he does not play for a better team. But maybe if he did, his season stats would not be that high. White has a very solid season. In 8 games in El Salvador he scored 20.3ppg. He also has 10.9rpg and 4.1apg. White attended one of camps at Eurobasket Summer League on his way to pro basketball.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Slim Magee (211-C-89) of Isidro Metapan - 22 points and 15 rebounds
5. Simbarahe Gwanyanya (191-G) of Giants - 31 points and 3 assists
6. Jared Ruiz (188-G-92) of Halcones - 29 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists
7. Elder Gimenez (186-F-91) of Isidro Metapan - 28 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists
8. Eliezer Montano (206-F/C-91) of El Rapido - 23 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists
9. Demontrez Austin (201-F) of Cojute - 20 points and 22 rebounds
10. Quincy Scates (197-SF-89) of Quezaltepeque - 28 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists

The Giessen 46ers Land Big Country John Bryant - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber

It was not long ago that John Bryant (210-C-87, college: Santa Clara) was living the glitz life in Munich while also visiting FC Bayern Munich soccer games and playing the game he loves for their basketball department, but times have changed and now the big man will be living the more tranquil life in Giessen and swap the isar river for a calm walk along the Lahn river. The Giessen 46ers have made a transfer coup by signing ex EasyCredit MVP John Bryant. Bryant is a 30 year old 201cm center from San Pablo, California that was the BBL's best rebounder for three years in a row from 2010-2013 with ratiopharm Ulm and has recieved a one year deal. "We are happy that we could get a known BBL player with a lot of experience", stressed Giessen head coach Ingo Freyer. Last season Bryant split time last season with Valencia Basket (Spain-Liga Endesa) playing 2 games averaging 1.0ppg; BCL: 7 games: 6.3ppg, released in Oct.'16, in Nov.'16 moved to AS Monaco Basket (France-ProA) playing 6 games averaging 6.5ppg, 4.0rpg, FGP: 56.0%, 3PT: 42.9%, FT: 50.0%, 5.4rpg, 1.7apg, FGP: 51.5%, 3PT: 16.7%, FT: 58.3%.It will be interesting to see exactly how well he fits into the Freyer system of run and gun. Bryant brings 245 BBL games to Giessen and 44 Euroleague games.

Bryant started his basketball career in 2005 with Santa Clara (NCAA) where he stayed until 2009 playing a total of 123 games and really sparkled as a junior and senior. As a senior he averaged 18.1ppg, RebNCAA-2 (14.2rpg), 1.1apg, 2.5bpg, FGP: 59.6%, FT: 78.7%. In 2009 he started his rookie season as a professional with Erie Bay Hawks (D-League) playing 48 games averaging 13.2ppg, 9.5rpg, 1.6apg, 1.5bpg, FGP: 49.3%, FT: 77.6%. In 2010 he moved to ratiopharm Ulm as then head coach Mike Taylor believed in his abilities and helped him become the best center in the BBL as he averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds in his three seasons there. In 2013 he made the jump to FC Bayern Munich where he played three season. He couldn't match his stats of Ulm in Munich simply because he had a lot more talent around him and wasn't the number one option anymore. he still put up excellent stats as he was the third and fifth best rebounder in the BBL in two of his three seasons there.

Awards and achievements in his basketball career have been WCC All-Freshman Team -06, WCC Regular Season Runner-Up -07, WCC Tournament Finalist -07, WCC Tournament Semifinals -08, 09, NABC Division I All-District 9 First Team -09, WCC All-Tournament Team -09, All-WCC 1st Team -08, 09, WCC Player of the Year -09, NCAA DI All-Star Game -09, AP NCAA All-America Honorable Mention -09, Eurobasket.com All-German Bundesliga Center of the Year -11, Eurobasket.com All-German Bundesliga Defensive Player of the Year -11, Eurobasket.com All-German Bundesliga 1st Team -11, 12,, 13, Eurobasket.com German Bundesliga All-Imports Team -11, 13, German Bundesliga All-Star Game -12 (MVP), 13, 14, 15, German Bundesliga Cup Semifinals -12, 14, Eurobasket.com All-German Bundesliga Center of the Year -12, 13, German Bundesliga Regular Season Runner-Up -12

Vechta signs Jannik Freese - by Eurobasket News

SC Rasta Vechta (ProA) signed 31-year old power forward Jannik Freese (211-113kg-86). He played last season at EWE Baskets in German BBL league. Freese helped them to make it to the final. He also played 7 games in Basketball Champions League where he recorded only 1.0ppg. The other team Freese played that season for was Braunschweig (also in BBL). In 12 games he averaged 6.3ppg and 3.3rpg.

Andrew Jones Has Always Had A Scoring Gene But In The Pro A Can Put More Energy Into Defense - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber

Andrew Jones (191-SG-83, college: Miles) is a 34 year old 191cm combo guard that has been a professional basketball player since 2007. He played at Miles (NCAA2) and has played in Germany for most of his professional career with four seasons with the Dresden Titans and three seasons with the BG Aschersleben Tigers (Germany-Regionalliga). He also gained experience playing with teams like Marietta Storm (SEBL), BC Celtics (SEBL), C.B. Aridane (Spain-EBA) and Universidad Tecnologica Equinoc. Quito (Ecuador-National League). He last played with the Dresden Titans (Germany-ProB) playing 28 games averaging 9.5ppg, 3.9rpg, 2.8apg, 1.0spg, FGP: 44.2%, 3PT: 23.7%, FT: 63.6%. Currently he is practicing with the German Pro A team Chemnitz. He spoke to eurobasket about basketball.

Andrew thanks for talking to eurobasket.com. Where are you at the moment and how has your summer been?

What's up Miles! I'm living in Dresden with my wife and daughter. The summer was very relaxing.

Did you experience anything really cool this summer, an experience that you had never had before that made your summer extra special?

Being able to wake up every day healthy and strong was coolest thing I did this summer. This summer was more about rest and family. There were no big vacations.

After a solid 2015-2016 season with the Dresden Titans where you averaged 9.5ppg, 3.9rpg, 2.8apg, 1.0spg, FGP: 44.2%, 3PT: 23.7%, FT: 63.6%, you didn't play last season. Did you want to take a year off to experience new things or did the right offer not come about?

Actually that was a terrible performance that year, lol. I played in Bolivia for four months right after that season. I had a few offers in South America, but I would have been gone too long from the family. So I chose to stay close. My daughter was going to kindergarten for the first time. I wanted to be there for her and my wife.

Did you follow your ex team Dresden Titans? Were you surprised that they totally fell apart last season in the Pro A. The talent was there, but was possibly that experienced guy like yourself missing that could have kept the team together better in tough times?

Yes, I was very close to the team last year. It did surprise me that they didn't remain in Pro A. The team was young, but I think they were ok. The first 6 or 7 games of the season was close ones that they lost. If they had a better start of the season, then all the changes made would have not happened I think.

How tough was it not playing last season. How quickly did you get that itch back to want to compete and weren't able to. What did you miss most about the game besides the urge to compete week in and week out?

It wasn't tough at all. I really took a break from basketball because I needed it. I would practice from time to time to keep my body in shape. I really wanted to be there for my daughter and wife. They had my full attention. I missed the daily training most of all. I had times where I did not train for a few weeks. I could tell the difference in my body. I didn't like that feeling.

Now your back and have been training with German Pro A team Chemnitz. What kind of experience has that been for you and how thankful are you for getting this experience?

This experience is more than I expected! The club has been great. Coach Rodrigo has a very high coaching I.Q. I'm learning every day. I thank God for putting me in this situation.

Has your overall training and work out regime that you had in the last year helped you be successful with Chemnitz in pre season. How has your training had to have changed with age?

I was worried when I knew I would train with them. I was not in the best shape, however I put my best foot forward. Taking the year off from basketball affected me a little as well. Getting some of the plays down took some time. My basketball brain did not kick in until the third week. My training has stayed the same. It's the preparation and regeneration that changes. Taking care of your body after practices and games are the keys to staying in it.

You played in the Pro B and Regionaliga as a professional in Germany and now at age 34 in the Pro A. How have you been coping with the speed of the game? Is this one of the biggest differences between the Pro A and Pro B?

Honestly depending on who you play for there is no difference. However, Coach Rodrigo wants things done the right way. His style of play makes you create more opportunities for the next teammate. I compare it to styles of the euroleague teams. The speed for me is no difference. Playing with a group of guys with a pass first mentality, is something new for me. It's a better brand of basketball.

In our last interview after losing to Frankfurt in the playoffs in 2016, you stated you hadn't been too happy with your season as you could have done more offensively. What do you feel would be your biggest strength on the court in the Pro A?

I would say attacking the basket and defending. Most Pro A teams have stronger rosters than a Pro B. I would have to do less offensively on a Pro A team. I will be able to put more energy into defense. Of course, scoring has always been my strength. But, when your on a strong team everyone has their job.

A good fit for you would be to be active with the Chemnitz youth program as a type of mentor. How do you feel could you help young players best on the court?

My overall experience with the game would help. It's not just about dribbling, defending, shooting and whatever physical thing that's done on the court. The mental side of the game is just as important. Teaching them how to deal with adversity as well as the game itself would be my main focus.

You have been playing with some talented guys like Jajuan Johnson , Andy Mazurchak and Daniel Mixich at the guard position. The competition level must be very high. How pleased have you been with your effort and efficiency to keep up with these kids?

Andy always jokes with me about them letting me win if we have run, lol. If I have to chase guys who are 10 years or more younger than me, it keeps me in shape. I enjoy it a lot.

It doesn't matter who I talk with but players are always lauding head coach Rodrigo Pastore. What has impressed you with his coaching style and knowledge of the game.

He was so close to leading the team to the BBL last season. From the first day I trained with him he expected high level performance. With everything! That means footwork, setting screens, making the right reads and so much more. He prepares very well and really knows the game. He treats every player from young to old the same. If anyone makes a mistake he let's them know quickly.

If you had to construct your own NBA Rushmore which 4 heads would you chose?

Shaq, Jordan, Lebron and Iverson

Lebron James failed to win his fourth NBA title and is still three away from Michael Jordan. Where does Lebron stand right now in your opinion in the never ending debate of who is the best of all-time?

People give so much hate to Lebron it's crazy. Jordan and Lebron are two different players at two different positions. No one compares Kareem and Jordan, but hey what do I know lol. Lebron will shatter all statistical records, but It's hard to say right now. Ask me in 3 years.

There has been criticism of Russell Westbrook to be focusing more on rebounding to help inflate his stats and possibilities of getting triple doubles instead of focusing on his defensive assignments. Do you feel that this is a fair assessment to the player Russell Westbrook?

People should just allow guys to play and not worry about if he should do certain things. If his coach allows him to play like that, then that's all that matters.

How do you summarize the 2017 NBA Draft. What sleepers do you see playing a role in the NBA?

I barely keep up with college these days. But I hope Lonzo Ball does something good.

Where will the journey of the Houston Rockets go this season with Chris Paul and James Harden in the back court. Do they have enough to make a serious run at the title or is something missing?

They both like the ball in there hands, we will see how that works lol

How do you rate the Kyrie Irving-Isaiah Thomas trade? Who got the better deal and which team will profit better in the long run?

They both got a good deal. Hard to play with guys if they are not happy

What was the last movie that you saw?

Before The Bough Breaks.

Thanks Andrew for the chat.

He recently was in Frankfurt to play a pre season tournament and found some time to talk to eurobasket about basketball.

Jason thanks for talking to eurobasket.com.You are going into your sixth professional season and fifth in Belgium and second with Telenet Giants Antwerp (Belgium-Euromillions League). Has it just always been the right fits in Belgium or does that leagues style just fit your game best that hasn't made you test other leagues except Turkey?

Going into my 6th season and I'm loving Europe. Traveling to many different countries and playing so many games is a blessing. I think the Belgian league is a great fit for me but I also know other countries are also. I love the Belgian league and I felt like I had a lot to prove especially after being one of the best players my rookie season and having it cut short by a season ending injury.

Last season with Port of Antwerp Giants (Belgium-Euromillions League) you won your second professional title with the Super Cup. With that second title under your belt does that give you a new kind of self confidence going into this season?

Last year was my first full season in Belgium and I was in the perfect position. Playing under a great coach that believed in me and put his trust in me to play the PG position. It wasn't an easy road but I learned the position pretty fast. We won the super cup (2nd time winning it) I also won with my team my rookie season in Aalst. Our team last year finished 2nd in the rankings and made it to the semifinals. With those great accomplishments also came with a league MVP trophy for me. But it wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for the great coaches and great players I had around me.

You had many very special teammates last season and one was Mike Smith. After misfortune in Germany and the D-League he came back and found a home in Belgium becoming a top player in the league for years. How vital was his leadership in the success of the team?

Playing with Mike Smith was a great experience for me. I've also been on the other side when it came to seeing him on the court and he is a fierce competitor that gives his all and is always willing to do whatever the team needs done. His leadership for our team was huge and it was also huge for me to have that kind of experience helping me grow as a player.

Another special player you had last season was American Ryan Anderson. After a great senior year at Arizona and Portsmouth invitational tournament he found himself in Europe instead of the NBA. This season he is in Germany with the s.Oliver Wurzburg. How special is he and can he make the jump to the NBA?

Playing with Ryan was great! His one of the best rebounders I've seen in a lot of years. He has an instinct for find a way to collect boards and get easy points for the team. What I saw most improve for him was his jump shot. He developed a 3 pointer that can definitely help prolong his career. He's also a great guy off the court probably one of the funniest guys I've been around also. A great locker room guy.

This season the club kept only you as the import, but got some talented Americans with Tyller Kalinowski, Dave Dudzinski and Paris Lee. What is your outlook on this season and what the club is capable of doing?

We've got a very talented group this year. Our style of play will be a little different but we definitely have the tools to play inside and out. We got a couple great shot blockers that will really change the shape of our defense. The new guys are fitting in well man. Everyone is getting along off and on the court and becoming a family pretty fast. That will be important for us to succeed.

In our last interview in the 2014-2015 season you moved around a lot playing in Germany, Belgium and Turkey. What did you learn from this season that has kept you more grounded staying in one place the last two seasons?

I was moving around a lot during that season because my first two jobs I was there on an injury replacement for two players until they were healthy to play. But that year was really special for me. I stayed consistent with my play and it helped me because all three leagues were different styles of play so it was good for me to experience all of that in a short amount of time. It helped me grow as a player .

You played that one season in Turkey on the same team with sniper Ricky Harris. You have played with many great players, but where does he rate up with guys that you have played with that can flat out shoot the ball?

I didn't get to play with Ricky that season but I've seen him play a lot. I'm a big fan of his game. He's one of those guys that just never stops coming at you. He can shoot it, pass it and get to the basket with ease. Defenders have a tough job when it comes to covering him on a nightly basis. His crossovers are some of the deadliest.

You worked out this past summer with many of your ex teammates from Georgetown like Greg Monroe, Greg Sims or Julian Vaughn. When you look back at from then and now which player do you feel has grown the most on the court as a player?

I follow the guys I've played with like Henry Sims, Greg Monroe Chris Wright, Austin Freeman and also Vee Sanford. I've watched all of them develop and get better each summer. Every single one of them have worked hard on their game to become the best they can be. Working out in the summer with these guys is something that we want to keep doing for a long time. It's a friendship that will probably last forever. It's also a key to our getting better because we know that each of us will go hard while in the gym.

Thanks Jason for the chat.

Chiba Jets ink Gavin Edwards - by Eurobasket News

Chiba Jets (B League) agreed terms with 29-year old American power forward Gavin Edwards (206-104kg-88, college: Connecticut) from SeaHorses. Edwards has played there for the last four years. In 64 B League games in Japan he had 14.7ppg, 7.6rpg, 1.5apg and 1.2bpg last season. Edwards helped them to win the regular season and make it to the semifinals. Quite impressive season as he was named to Asia-Basket.com All-Japanese B League Honorable Mention.
He has tried to make it to the NBA and played in the NBA Pro Summer League in 2012.
The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others Edwards won Japanese NBL championship title in 2015. He was also voted Asia-Basket.com All-Japanese NBL Defensive Player of the Year in 2015.
Edwards is quite experienced player. He has played in five different countries on three different continents (Europe, Asia and of course North America). Edwards has played previously professionally in Greece (Peristeri GS Athens), Korea (Anyang KGC), Malaysia (KL Dragons), Ukraine (Khimik) and D-League (Springfield A.).
He attended University of Connecticut until 2010 and it will be his eighth season as a professional player.
Edwards could be described: A big man who runs the floor very well. In the post he is effective, relying mainly on hook shots with either hand. Edwards gets the job done with very good footwork and awareness in combination with a great sense of where to be without the ball, leading to a lot of open looks around the rim and good positioning when he catches entry passes. He shows good touch on his hook shots when he is able to create separation with his man, though he struggles with accuracy, sometimes significantly, when his shot is contested, something that is concerning in projecting to the next level. Edwards is an outstanding finisher in transition, due primarily to his very high level of coordination and body control, as he often catches the ball on the move and still makes the adjustment around the rim. He has also a good mid-range jumper, which allows him to become a threat face to the basket as well. Defensively in the post, Edwards does a very good job off the ball, manning up and denying strong position to his man.

Former Magic GM Rob Hennigan Rejoining Thunder - by Eurobasket News

Three months after being dismissed by the Magic, veteran executive Rob Hennigan is returning to his old NBA home, according to Michael Scotto of Basketball Insiders. League sources tell Scotto that the Thunder have re-hired the former Orlando general manager. Hennigan, who spent five years as the Magic's GM, was a member of the Oklahoma City front office before making the move to Orlando. During his final two seasons with the Thunder, Hennigan served as the club's assistant general manager/player personnel. Before that, he spent two seasons as OKC's director of college/international player personnel. While Hennigan didn't have much success in Orlando during his first stint as the head of a basketball operations department, reports in the wake of his firing suggested that he remained widely respected around the NBA, and would likely receive 'attractive' offers from other teams. It remains to be seen what Hennigan's new title in Oklahoma City will be, but it's worth noting that one of the Thunder's assistant general managers, Michael Winger, left the franchise last month to become the Clippers' new GM. It would make sense for Hennigan to help fill the hole created by Winger's departure, rejoining old friends Sam Presti and Troy Weaver in OKC's basketball operations department.

Josh Richardson finalizing four-year, $42M contract extension with Heat - by Eurobasket News

As a second-round draft pick of the Miami Heat, Josh Richardson (6'6''-G-93, college: Tennessee) didn't have the expectations or guarantees that first-round draft picks are afforded. However, Richardson immediately showed he was a reliable guard in the NBA. Miami is reportedly doubling down on the young guard by giving him an extension. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Richardson and the Heat are finalizing a four year $42 million extension. This locks him into the Heat long term and makes him a crucial part of their growing young core. The Heat are putting a lot of faith in Richardson to continue showing improvement as he gains more NBA experience. He's definitely had flashes of solid play in his brief two years, but it's not often to see a team buy into a second-round pick so quickly. This continues a trend by Miami this offseason to double down on what they built in the second half of last season. The Heat have re-signed almost all their key pieces from last year's team to long-term deals. This gives the Heat a lot of continuity, but it means they're going to put a lot of faith in young players to show improvement and raise their ceiling.

Stephon Marbury announces he's attempting an NBA comeback at the age of 40 - by Eurobasket News

A Starbury born again? Former NBA All-Star Stephon Marbury (6'2''-G-77, college: Georgia Tech) is looking to make an NBA comeback. The former Knick posted on social media Tuesday morning announcing his next move is to get back into the league. Marbury shared a video on Instagram confirming his desire to return to the NBA. "I'm making a #nba come back for the fans who want to see me play my last year as a pro. After hearing so many people say come back I finally prayed about it and gave it major thought," Marbury's post read. The point guard has recently been playing in the Chinese Basketball League for the Beijing Ducks. His contract was terminated in April following a dispute over his role and salary with the team. His contract included an option for Marbury to be a part of the Ducks as either a player or assistant coach for the upcoming season, according to Sports Illustrated. Marbury didn't want to be a coach so he and the team decided to part from one another. Marbury averaged 21.4 points, 5.5 assists and four rebounds in 36 games. In July, Marbury announced he'd be joining the Beikong Fly Dragons. Marbury spent five seasons with the Knicks from 2004-2008 and was not well-liked in his time in New York. The 40-year-old was consistently a problem off the court, often feuding with coaches and the front office. There was also an incident where he ate Vaseline straight out of a jar. He also played for the Nets, Timberwolves, Suns and Celtics between 1996-2009. The last time he was in the NBA was 2009 when played in 23 games for the Celtics.

Durham number one in Philippines for round 7 - by Eurobasket News

American Power forward Allen Durham (198-F/C-88) put on an amazing game in the last round for Meralco Bolts, receiving a Asia-basket.com Player of the Week award for round 7.
The 29-year old player had a double-double of 39 points and 24 rebounds, while his team Meralco Bolts maintains the 3rd position in Filipino PBA. They would have been even better if they did not have these two lost games earlier in Regular Season. Meralco Bolts will need to avoid more loses keep or improve their 6-2 record. In the team's last game Durham had a remarkable 52.2% from 2-point range. He turned to be Meralco Bolts' top player in his first season with the team. Former Grace Bible College star has very solid stats this year. Durham is in league's top in points (6th best: 27.9ppg) and assists (2nd best: 6.8apg). Worth to mention Durham played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball.

The second best player in last round's games was 30-year old American Terrence Watson (200-F-87, agency: Octagon Europe) of SM Beermen. Watson had a very good evening with a double-double of 28 points and 17 rebounds. It was enough for SM Beermen to edge the higher-ranked B.Ginebra (#1, 7-2) 107-103. It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the title. SM Beermen consolidated its place in top 4 of the standings. His team's 5-3 record is not bad at all. Watson is a newcomer at SM Beermen, but is already one of team's top players.

Third on the list of top players last round was American forward LaDontae Henton (198-F-92) of Alaska Aces (#9). Henton got into 30-points club by scoring 36 points in the last round. He went also for twenty one rebounds and four assists. He was a key player of Alaska Aces, leading his team to a 101-88 easy win against slightly lower-ranked Globalport (#10, 2-5). The chances of Alaska Aces not to end season at such low position in the league, however are less than slim as they have already lost 6 games, recording just three victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Henton could try to bring Alaska Aces' a little bit higher in the standings. Henton has individually a great season in Philippines. After only 9 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 29.6ppg (4th best) and rebounds with 12.4rpg (8th best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Calvin Abueva (190-F-88) of Alaska Aces - 26 points, 15 rebounds and 3 assists
5. J'Nathan Bullock (196-F-87) of Rain or Shine - 22 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists
6. Justin Brownlee (197-F-88) of B.Ginebra - 17 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists
7. Malcolm Hill (198-G-95) of Star Hotshots - 28 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists
8. Henry Walker (198-G/F-87) of Blackwater - 26 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists
9. Glen Rice Jr. (198-G/F-91) of TNT Ka Tropa - 32 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists
10. Greg Slaughter (216-C-88) of B.Ginebra - 22 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists

Let's have closer look into Ortiz's outlook: Chris Ortiz is really athletic, and he is stronger and weighs more than he looks. He is a guy who brings some toughness to the defensive end. He brings a length and athleticism to the four spot. Chris is a shot-blocker. He is a rebounder. He finishes great in transition. He can shoot it.

Mickeal Makiadi gets MVP of the Week award for Ugandan NBL - by Eurobasket News

Kenyan Mickeal Makiadi (199-C/F-89) had a very impressive game in the last round for league's second-best Power and that's him to receive a Afrobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 25.
The 28-year old had a double-double of 23 points and twelve rebounds, while his team beat Our Saviour (#8, 4-9) 70-65. Power maintains the 2nd position in Ugandan NBL. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Power will need more victories to improve their 11-4 record. Makiadi has many years of experience at Power, through which he has constantly improved. Makiadi has impressive league stats. He is in league's top in points (2nd best: 18.5ppg).

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young Tanzanian forward Fadhili Chuma (F-95) of UCU Canons. Chuma impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Of course UCU Canons cruised to a 64-56 relatively comfortable win over slightly lower-ranked Ndejje (#5, 8-5). UCU Canons' 3rd position in the standings has not changed. His team's 11-4 record is not bad at all. Chuma is one of the most experienced players at UCU Canons and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

The third best performed player last round was Maker Deng (94) of Ndejje (#5). Deng scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds. Despite Deng's great performance Ndejje lost 56-64 to slightly higher-ranked UCU Canons (#3, 11-4). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The last thing Ndejje needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 8 victories and 5 lost games. Deng has a great season in Uganda. After 14 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 13.3ppg (6th best) and rebounds with 9.0rpg (7th best). He also has 1.1bpg and FGP: 65.8%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Micheal Bwanga (G) of KIU Titans - 13 points, 2 rebounds and 7 assists
5. David Opolot (F-89) of Our Saviour - 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists
6. Kijogoo Mwalimu (G) of KIU Titans - 16 points and 4 rebounds
7. Oscar Muge (C-93) of KIU Titans - 12 points and 4 rebounds
8. Lual Titus (C-98) of UCU Canons - 11 points and 8 rebounds
9. Paul Odong (G-91) of Power - 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists
10. Felix Mukunzi) of UPDF - 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists

The newest Leopard is excited about joining the Big Cats: "I am excited and honoured to be signing for Leopards this season" said Callum.
"I've been working hard individually over the summer, putting in work day and night. So that I was ready to play when an opportunity came. I can't wait to play under Coach Baker and Coach Malpass! And I'm looking forward to playing with my new teammates."
Baker is delighted with his latest signing: "With Korry we are adding another player with past BBL experience" said.

Patrons Cup preview - by Dave Ryan

Half of the 12 NBL Division Two side will be in action as the Patrons Cup starts this weekend.

The 12 sides are divided into four groups of three, with teams playing each other once and the group winners progressing to the semi-finals.

With the London derby between Westside and Greenhouse Pioneers having been postponed (Westminster Warriors completing the group), the only action on Saturday takes place in the north west. Having avoided relegation by a single win last season, Liverpool will look to open the season with a victory when they host newly promoted Team Birmingham Elite.

Liverpool have added former Lancashire Spinners pair Dave Ulph and Jack Hudson, Daniel Pilkington from Manchester Giants II, Trevor Samuels from Manchester Giants and Daniel Walsh from Sefton, while Joe Irving returns after a two-year hiatus from basketball.
Seventeen wins from 20 games were enough to give Elite the Division Three North title last season and seal their return to the NBL's second tier. Derbyshire Arrows complete the group, with Pete Kelley's side hosting Liverpool and travelling to Birmingham.

The following day sees two of the divisions favourites for promotion in action, with the first game seeing Thames Valley Cavaliers travelling to Middlesex LTBC.

Cavaliers missed out on promotion to the top flight last season, finishing third despite losing only four of their 22 games. They ran Division One side Worthing close in a pre-season friendly last week, with the teams tied at 68 going into the final four minutes before the home side pulled away to win 82-72. Former Surrey Heat guard Martelle McLemore (197-G/F-88, college: W.Michigan) led the Cavaliers with 30 points in that game, and the 29-year-old is expected to be a key part of their promotion push.

Middlesex are a side consisting of London-based Lithuanians, and won promotion last season as they finished top of Division Three South with a 15-3 record to reach the second tier for the first time. Surrey Bears are the other side in the group, Gary Smith's side will host Middlesex and travel to Cannons.

Another side making their Division Two debut is Essex Leopards who saw their 13-year stay in Division One end when they were relegated last season, and they will host Nottingham Hoods at the Brentwood Centre.

After season in Division Four with Newham Nepturnes' B team he helped their first team win Division Two and reach the play-offs in their first season in the top flight. He rejoined the Leopards in the summer of 2014 and won the club's Most Valuable Player award as the Big Cats stormed to the Division One title.
Coach Thomas Baker is delighted to add Ashby to his squad: "Adding someone of Will's quality is something I'm really pleased with. I know he has been part of this club before and everyone is excited to have him back" he said.
"In pre-season Will demonstrated his ability to shoot the three and play relentless defence on numerous occasions, adding to the quality we already have in the team.
"Having had conversations with Will over the past few weeks he is 100 percent invested in bringing success to the team and we are in for an exciting season ahead and I am looking forward to starting this weekend."

It's great to be a part of a really strong young team who have their goals set on silverware and promotion. It will be a great year and I look forward to be playing in front of the Essex fans again in my hometown."

Thomas-Johnson ready to fire Mystics to more glory - by Paul Nilsen

Lauren Thomas-Johnson (178-G-88, college: Marquette) is to suit up once again with Manchester Mystics and looks set to be a powerful force after recording an impressive return to the WBBL last season.

After coming back from maternity leave, the former Hatters star and GB international caught fire with Mystics, not only enjoying WBBL Cup silverware shortly after her re-integration, but finishing the season as one of the form players in the league.

'I am so excited to get back to it and keep the ball rolling from what I started last season when obviously I came into it part of the way through,' stated Thomas-Johnson

'It's not been the easiest after becoming a mum in terms of getting back to where I wanted to be, but I have been working hard and I feel like I have now lost some of the weight that I needed to.

'I am ready to get back to the old Lauren and I think it is great that I can offer experience to the team along with some of the other players who are returning.'

The flexibility of Thomas-Johnson who can play multiple positions and her nice athleticism, smarts and scoring touch, are all massive positives that Mystics head coach Jeff Jones is only too happy to have back in the mix.

He declared: 'Lauren came to the team in early January after the birth of her son and helped us with her experience and basketball IQ.

'Needless to say she had to adjust her game a bit, but I believe it helped her in certain ways not always relying on her athleticism.

'She has been working hard in the gym over the summer and we are looking forward to seeing the benefits on the floor this season.

'It will be tough for her juggling parenthood and playing, but I am more than confident she will be able to handle it and her experience will invaluable to us as a team,' stated the play-caller.

Thomas-Johnson made an immediate impact for Mystics last season by racking up more than 13 points and 6 boards per outing in the WBBL Championship.

Sparks rally to beat Phoenix 79-66 in playoff opener - by Eurobasket News

The Sparks were rusty to start the playoffs. Coming in off an eight-day layoff, they fell behind early before rallying to beat the Phoenix Mercury 79-66 to open defense of their WNBA championship on Tuesday night. Nneka Ogwumike (6'3''-F-90, college: Stanford) scored 19 points to lead five starters in double figures in Game 1 of the best-of-5 series. Candace Parker (6'4''-C/F-86, college: Tennessee) added 15 points while playing with five fouls. Ogwumike overcame four fouls. Chelsea Gray (5'11''-G-92, college: Duke) had 13 points, Odyssey Sims (5'9''-G-92, college: Baylor) 12 and Alana Beard 11. "Their chemistry you can tell is pretty strong right now," Phoenix guard Diana Taurasi (6'0''-SG-82, college: Connecticut) said. "They seem a lot more sure of themselves and they showed that tonight." Leilani Mitchell (5'5''-PG-85, college: Utah) led the Mercury with 19 points and made five 3-pointers, both career playoff highs. Brittney Griner (6'8''-C-90, college: Baylor) added 18 points - but just four in the second half - before fouling out with 4:44 left in the game. "Some of the calls just didn't go our way," Griner said. "Next game we're going to have to be on our front foot a little bit more and hope we get some of those calls." Beard's defense helped limit Taurasi to 2 of 10 shooting for a career playoff low six points. "In the first half, she got hit, knocked down and got right up and went and found D," Parker said of her teammate. "She's persistent." After trailing much of the first half, the Sparks pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Phoenix 14-6 to lead 56-48. "If it was one-and-done, we'd be going on vacation tomorrow pretty (ticked) off," Taurasi said. "We'll take this game in stride. We didn't play great in large stretches of the game and we still had an opportunity." Things got testy with 28 seconds left in the period. Phoenix's Emma Cannon and the Sparks' Essence Carson (6'0''-G/F-86, college: Rutgers) were called for double technicals after exchanging words. Before that, Phoenix's Camille Little (6'2''-F/G-85, college: N.Carolina) was called for a blocking foul, with Parker on the floor with her legs in the air and her arms protecting her face. Parker's 3-pointer in the fourth gave Los Angeles its first double-digit lead of the game at 61-50. The Mercury closed to 70-63 on Little's basket. "I'm proud of how we adjusted," Parker said. "I'm proud of our team and how we settled down coming out of halftime." Ogwumike completed a three-point play sandwiched around Parker's free throw on a technical to Little that pushed the Sparks' lead to 74-63. The Mercury had to win back-to-back elimination games in order to make the semifinals for the eighth time in nine years. The Sparks came in well-rested, having had the last eight days off. Los Angeles, which won the final seven games of the regular season, appeared rusty to start, falling behind by eight while Griner scored her first six points. The Sparks didn't take their first lead of the game until late in the second quarter on Parker's 3-pointer. It was short-lived, and the teams went into halftime tied 42-all.
