Haminn Quantance claims Bahrain Premier League weekly honour - by Eurobasket News

Haminn Quantance put on an amazing game in the last round for Al-Najma and that's him to receive a Asia-basket.com Player of the Week award for round 2.
The had a double-double of 30 points and twenty one rebounds, while his team beat Al-Bahrain (#10, 0-2), the league's bottom-ranked team 106-93. Al-Najma is placed at 3rd position in Bahrain Premier League. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Al-Najma won both games without losing any. It's too early to say anything as the standings can be changed completely after next round. In the team's last game Quantance had a remarkable 62.5% from 2-point range and got five three-pointers out of 12 attempts. It's his second year at Al-Najma and it's hard to imagine this team without him. Quantance has impressive league stats. He is in league's top in points (7th best: 20.0ppg), rebounds (2nd best: 23.5rpg) and averages solid 4.0bpg,4.0spg and 66.7% FGP.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 31-year old Nigerian center Augustine Okosun (210-C-86) of Sitra. Okosun impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 20 points and 26 rebounds. It was enough for Sitra to edge Al-Ittihad (1-1) by 6 points 62-56. His team has extremely good start of the season. They won their first game. However the season is at the beginning, so everything can happen. They still may lose their high position in the standings. Okosun is a newcomer at Sitra and it seems he did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 20.0ppg (#6). He also registered 26.0 boards per game.

The third best performed player last round was American Antwan Wilkerson (201-F-91) of Al-Ittihad (#7). Wilkerson scored 17 points and grabbed fourteen rebounds (!!!). Despite Wilkerson's great performance Al-Ittihad lost 56-62 to Sitra (#5, 1-0). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The last thing Al-Ittihad needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 1 victory and 1 lost game. Wilkerson has a great season in Bahrain. After only 2 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 16.0rpg (5th best) and assists with 4.0apg (6th best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Ali Abbas) of Al-Muharraq - 29 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists
5. Mahmood Aziz) of Isa Town - 24 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists
6. Mile Ilic (215-C-84) of Al-Nweidrat - 14 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists
7. Quinton Doggett (206-F-90) of Al-Ahli - 15 points and 11 rebounds
8. Abbas Jawadi (178-F-90) of Al-Najma - 27 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists
9. Ahmed Haji (175-PG) of Al-Hala - 17 points and 10 rebounds
10. Sidy Sall (206-F) of Al-Bahrain - 25 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

Florence Wildcats semi-pro program continues to grow - by Eurobasket News

A year after the inaugural season of the Florence Wildcats' semi-professional basketball team, the organization is looking to bring something brand new to the Pee Dee community. Next spring, the Wildcats not only will have a men's basketball program, but they also will have a women's semi-professional team. 'There's just a huge demand for it,' said Isaac Wilson the Wildcats' director of business operations. 'There's never been one in the Pee Dee area. We wanted to do something different and bring our community women's basketball.' The women's basketball team will play in the East Coast Basketball League's sister league, the Women's Elite Development Basketball League. Tryouts will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 16 and Sept. 17. The fee is $50. 'It's something we are really excited about,' Wilson said. 'We've narrowed down our candidates for our coaches, and we think this is just going to be a great opportunity for our community as a whole.' The Wildcats advanced to the second round of the ECBL playoffs in their first season, but one of the biggest achievements was seeing stars Quincy Washington (6'5''-G, college: Charleston), who averaged a league-best 41 points per game, and Leroy Williams (6'5''-F-88), who had a league-best 14 rebounds per game, get scholarship offers to play basketball at Allen University, an NAIA school in Columbia. 'It's been really challenging but a lot of fun,' Wilson said. 'Seeing Quincy and Leroy go on to the next step in their lives is what we were started for. We want to help assist these young guys and help them out and we were able to do that. It's just an awesome thing to see how it's all worked out, and we know the best is yet to come.' The slogan of the Florence Wildcats is 'Community first, then basketball.' While the Wildcats look to continue to excel on the court, Wilson believes adding the women's program can help the community off the court. 'This gives better opportunities for the young women out there as well,' Wilson said. 'What we want to see is the men and women work collaboratively together to reach everyone in the community. There's only so much that guys can do for young girls, but the women can be that role model for the young girls out there.' Everything is still on schedule for the Wildcats to play in the newly built city of Florence basketball complex in 2018 with the women playing first, followed by the men. 'We want to keep it affordable,' Wilson said. 'Our ultimate goal is to be that help in the community and to connect, and one way we do that is through basketball.'

Salvadorean Liga MB round 22 best performance: Raymond Miller - by Eurobasket News

American Power forward Raymond Miller (204-F/C-88) put on an amazing game in the last round for Quezaltepeque, receiving a Latinbasket.com Liga MB Player of the Week award for round 22.
The 29-year old player had a double-double of 26 points and 25 rebounds, while his team outclassed Canarios (#4, 11-5) with 43-point margin 119-76. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Quezaltepeque is placed at 3rd position in Salvadorean Liga MB. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Quezaltepeque will need more victories to improve their 12-5 record. Miller turned to be Quezaltepeque's top player in his first season with the team. Former California State University, Fullerton star has very solid stats this year. Miller is in league's top in rebounds (5th best: 16.1rpg) and averages impressive 2.8bpg and 51.0% FGP.

The second best player in last round's games was -year old American Joe Reid (200-F) of Arcense. Reid had a very good evening with a double-double of 45 points and 16 rebounds. Bad luck as Arcense lost that game 90-95 to slightly higher-ranked Cojute (#8, 9-9). Arcense is still in a red zone at 10th spot in the standings. 11 lost games are too many comparing to just three victories Arcense managed to get this year. Reid is a newcomer at Arcense, but is already one of team's top players.

Third on the list of top players last round was another Arcense's star - American forward Jovany Austin (201-F-92). Austin scored 26 points and grabbed twenty two rebounds (!!!). Despite Austin's great performance Arcense lost 90-95 to slightly higher-ranked Cojute (#8, 9-9). But his team cannot count on just these two top stars as they also need help of the other teammates. Arcense can only dream about fighting for top spots in the league. They have rather bad season and 3-11 record places them close to the bottom of the standings. Too bad for Austin he does not play for a better team. But maybe if he did, his season stats would not be that high. Austin has individually a great season in El Salvador. After 10 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 17.7rpg (#1 in league).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Shahmel Brackett (183-PG-91) of Santiagueno - 38 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists
5. Simbarahe Gwanyanya (191-G) of Giants - 37 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists
6. David Lawson (185-PG-89) of Canarios - 42 points and 3 rebounds
7. Quincy Scates (197-SF-89) of Quezaltepeque - 28 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists
8. Demontrez Austin (201-F) of Cojute - 16 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists
9. Simeon Howard (193-G/F-92) of Cojute - 34 points, 13 rebounds and 2 assists
10. Maurice Williams (196-PF) of Santiagueno - 20 points, 15 rebounds and 2 assists

He spoke to eurobasket after the victory against Brose Bamberg in an exhibition meeting in Bayreuth

Kevin thanks for talking to eurobasket.com. Welcome to Germany. Its only September, but already so cold in Germany something you haven't seen the last weeks in Greece. Does this weather remind you back of home in Illinois?

The weather in Germany did remind me of home. When I got off the plane my fellow American teammates were saying that this weather was more like it. In Greece it is sometimes too hot.

Your playing your fifth professional season and first with PAOK have never played a professional game in Germany. Your ex Dayton teammates Josh Parker, Vee Sanford and Matt Kavanaugh all played here. Did the country first become a topic for you with the emergence of Dennis Schroeder or did you know about it before?

I actually have played in Germany before. I think it was my second season and it was a qualifying game. All I really knew about the basketball in Germany is that it is very physical. They have a lot of very good physical bigs and a couple good guards.

I will quiz you now. You play so many games, but let's see how good your memory is. In your junior season you beat Boston College 87-71 and you had 14 points. BC German Patrick Heckman had 13 points in 17 minutes. Do you remember him? He recently was a member of Team Germany at the 2017 European championships.

I have to be honest, but I didn't remember him. He will have had to have done something remarkably good for me to have remembered him. I am so competitive that players in general are all the same to me.

You are playing in a weekend tournament in Bayreuth against Germany's top team Brose Bamberg. What kind of experience was it playing against Germany's best basketball club and beating them 75-74

It was a pretty good game. I was content with my 20 point game. It seemed like everyone counted us out of this game and Bamberg have many good players and have very much depth, but we proved that we are a pretty good team as well. We have been working very hard this pre season on our chemistry and developing it further. This was a very good test for us and we passed. I feel that we sent a message today to everyone.

In your last game in Israel last season you defeated top Euroleague team Macabbi Tel Aviv 80-70 and held new Bamberg player Quincy Miller-Scott to 0 points. He has bounced around and feels the need to have to prove himself all over again. Do you feel he could become an impact player with Bamberg?

Of course he can. With his size and skill level, the sky is the limit for him. I don't know why he bounced around so much, maybe because it is part of the business, but if he can stay focused and keep his head on straight then I see him being an impact player. He wasn't in the NBA for nothing.

This is your second tour of duty in Greece after playing briefly with AS Apollon Patras (Greece-A1) in the 2015-2016 season playing 11 games averaging 18.6ppg, 4.6rpg, 4.0apg, 2FGP: 52.6%, 3FGP: 40.5%, FT: 89.7%. You had very good stats then. Do you feel like the expectations are very high for you to perform like that or better this time around?

Yes I think that the expectations are very high for me in Greece this season. They all remember in Greece what I did the last time. I have been on a wave the last years and have played well wherever I was. There is this sense of urgency to bring that winning tradition at PAOK and that motivates me very much and I feel that nothing can get in our way this season. I feel like we will be able to make a push in the Greek and Champions League.

That season you lost twice to top Euroleague team Olympiacos once badly and the second time only by five points as you netted 16 points. You held your own against Europes best players like top guard Vasillis Spanoulis. Do you feel like at age 27 that you are still getting into your prime and will play for a Euroleague team one day?

I hope that through God's grace that this opportunity will come next season. I have always played well against Euroleague teams and I feel getting there is a reachable goal for me. All I need is to have someone that believes in me so I can prove myself further on that type of stage. I want to be in the Euroleague.

You continue to display your talent against better teams and top players like when you hit Maccabi Tel Aviv for 10 points in 15 minutes in a 80-70 win beating top players like Andrew Goudelock, Devin Smith or DJ Seely. Do these results motivate you more each time and is it just luck and being in the right place for landing with a top club?

In the summer I am always in different gyms working on my game and competing against many top level players. I don't put any team I beat if it was a Euroleague team or team at the bottom on a pedestal. I am a competitor and stay focused and just be prepared for the next opponent. I am the type of player that is never satisfied and am always achieving to get better. I am not happy where I am. I still have many goals to achieve.

You have put up mostly very solid stats no matter where you have played. What is your secret to be able to adapt so well wherever you go in a season?

It is two things that belongs to my secret. One is having faith in God and second is having trust in the work I put in. Some guys come to their teams and second guess about what they worked on the last summer. If you work on something 10,000 times during the summer and then have that situation five or six times in a game it is something natural. I trust myself and the work I put in.

PAOK Thessaloniki (Greece-A1) is a very traditional team and last won a title in 1999 being the cup. In a league that has a lot of talented teams what is your impression of this years team?. Reaching the playoffs is an expectation with this club. Can the team do more than just reach the playoffs, but annoy the top teams?

It isn't unrealistic that we could achieve more than just reach the playoffs. We have a good group of guys that understand the importance of this season for themselves and the organization. I feel that we are more than a playoff team, but a team that can win the Greek league and be a top 4 Champions League team. If we stay focused and build on our chemistry then we have all the tools to have a great season. This is the most complete team I have ever played with and with the most weapons and that is exactly what I need as a point guard.

When you were a rookie in Italy you split the season series against Trento and dueled against new teammate and ex Syracuse player Brandon Triche who has had a stellar career in Europe. How excited are you to be his teammate and could you and him become a top 1-2 guard duo in Greece?

I was really surprised that they were able to pull this deal off. My dad called me and told me it and I couldn't believe it. It is great that he is here and I can't wait until he is on the floor. He will be very dangerous for us and will give fans hope. It shows how much potential we have when we were able to beat a very good Bamberg team without Brandon Triche.

You have played on many professional teams, but are still chasing that first professional title. Are your leadership skills something that you feel are there or something that you continue to develop?

I learn more each day about myself and how to connect my teammates more. The leadership is there, but you are a fool if you think that you know all. I gather new information each day and the coaching staff has helped me with that. People will still see us as a long shot this season, but don't count us out.

Last season you also played with the New Zealand Breakers (Australia-NBL) playing 9 games averaging 18.1ppg, 4.0rpg, 4.8apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 46.1%, 3FGP: 38.2%, FT: 85.7. In only your third game there you hit a memorable buzzer beater. Where does rank with your all-time game winning shots?

I am not going to lie, but that buzzer beater was my all-time greatest winning shot. We have all been in the drive way as a kid counting down the clock with the buzzer and making that shot. I have hit some game winning shots with two or three seconds left on the clock, but none with zero seconds remaining. It is the best feeling to sink a shot like that.

As a rookie you played with Novipiu Casale Monferrato (Italy-DNA Gold) playing 29 games averaging 15.7ppg, 3.2rpg, 3.9apg, 1.4spg, FGP: 43.1%, 3PT: 35.2%, FT: 77.9%. What was your wake up call to being a rookie in Europe where you knew that you were very far away from home in the States?

Being in the grocery store and knowing none of the food and just eating food that I usually wouldn't eat. There was also little English and I had no day to day conversations at the start. The beginning was tough, but my agent did a good job calming me down.

How important was American David Jackson for you as a rookie in Italy? Did you reminisce about your Illinois days as he went to Western and you southern?

Having that Illinois connection allowed us to connect from the start. He showed me the ropes and I am really grateful for that. He had a lot of experience and taught me what to be ready for in my career and now I am already prepared for it. He told me from the start that I would experience good and bad things and I am just thankful he prepared me for it.

You started your NCAA career at S Illinois before moving to Dayton (NCAA) in 2010. Despite going how did you benefit from your two years there?

I think that S Illinois helped my mind set and competitive nature benefited from my time there. I was taught to be competitive at all times and be ready for anything. I remember that in practices there would be no fouls and no out of bounds. It was all blood, sweat and tears. The whole experience gave me a dog mentality.

What do you remember from your battles in practice with Josh Parker? How did you make each other better best at Dayton?

I already knew Josh from high school as we are both from Chicago. I remember when I was visiting Dayton he showed me around. I told him right away that if he wanted to be the big man then I wouldn't come, but Josh told me right away that he wouldn't be like that and that we would be successful together. We were a good back court and he could really knock down shots. Being around a guy like Josh and Chris Johnson allowed me to develop being more of a fan of my teammates and be more of an encourager. Up to that point I had been more the quiet guy going to practice and home again. I learned to encourage my teammates at Dayton and it meant so much more to me when they encouraged me.

It took your teammate Vee Sanford a little longer than some to make it to a top league in Europe as this season he will play in the France pro A. Did you already notice at Dayton that he had the heart of a lion?

Yes I noticed that early on that Vee had the heart of a lion. He is another nice guy like Josh Parker. There is always going to be some guys that no matter how good they are, they just don't get that chance for whatever reason. Now he has that new opportunity in France and he is hungry and ready. He has waited so long and it's now or never. He will make the most out of his situation.

You always played very well against Xavier, but are the two tough loses in your junior season games that haven't been erased from your memory bank so quickly?

I remember those games against Xavier very well and especially the one's in their gym. When I was at Dayton the streak was something like 70 years that we hadn't won there. We always came so close to winning there. I can remember being in the huddle with two minutes to go knowing we were so close and thinking that finally we would win, but then for some reason something happened in their favor and they got lucky and won. Don't get me wrong they always had good players, but I always believed that we would come away with a win. I haven't watched much college basketball since.

How did Archie Miller groom and prepare you best for a professional basketball career at Dayton?

Before having Archie Miller as a coach, I didn't have the confidence in my shot or knowing how to effect the game in some way with scoring or passing. When I came to Dayton, he taught me to find other ways to impact the game when I wasn't scoring

Who was the toughest player that you battled ever that is in the NBA now?

CJ Mccollum. Going into my senior year, I went to a Lebron camp with many other talented players like Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr, BJ Young and Miles Plumlee. BJ Young came out after his sophomore year thinking he could go to the NBA via the Lebron camp. There was a good group of guys, but CJ Mccollum stood out the most. He already had league moves and was doing stuff that you just didn't see in college.

If you had to construct your own NBA Rushmore which 4 heads would you chose?

Jordan, Lebron, Kobe, Magic

Lebron James failed to win his fourth NBA title and is still three away from Michael Jordan. Where does Lebron stand right now in your opinion in the never ending debate of who is the best of all-time?

Lebron is second off all-time. There never will be another Jordan. I grew up in Chicago and watched him in 90's and carried us. Chicago became Chicago through the Bulls. Lebron will be number one in the stats.

There has been criticism of Russell Westbrook to be focusing more on rebounding to help inflate his stats and possibilities of getting triple doubles instead of focusing on his defensive assignments. Do you feel that this is a fair assessment to the player Russell Westbrook?

It is very hard to average a triple double at the pro level. What he did last season was a milestone and historical. He played defense. Players weren't lighting him up.

How do you summarize the 2017 NBA Draft. What sleepers do you see playing a role in the NBA?

Not many are talking about Jayson Tatum. I like him and he will be good. It will be interesting to see if he will start or come off the bench. The rookie of the year will be Dennis Smith. He is a mad athlete and his change of pace is crazy.

Where will the journey of the Houston Rockets go this season with Chris Paul and James Harden in the back court. Do they have enough to make a serious run at the title or is something missing?

The Rockets will be lucky if they get to the second round. The west is so deep. Yes they did get Chris Paul, but gave up so much for him. They have no one coming off the bench. Paul and Harden can't play 48 minutes for the whole season.

How do you rate the Kyrie Irving-Isaiah Thomas trade? Who got the better deal and which team will profit better in the long run?

I think the Cavs did. Boston got a good scorer in Irving who could score 30 a game. The Cavs got Thomas who could also score 30 and a good defender in Jae Crowder. Lebron now doesn't need to guard the three and could take Draymond Green and get a little rest.

What was the last movie that you saw?

A Channing Tatum movie.

Thanks Kevin for the chat.

Nikolas is a scoring machine, an amazing shooter, he is a very versatile player. He can play with the same ease three positions 2-3-4. Extraordinary shooting skills. There is no range he would not shoot from even though he is only 16 year old. Great 3-point shooter, probably the best in his age in all the country, he got twice the top scoring position in the last two tournaments allover Greece and he is the major element of his team's qualification in the final round. Perfect free-throw shooter (also belong to top ones at his age). Always converts fouls into real points. Good passer. Offensive machine. Quickness combined with athleticism. He can dunk quite easy as he has quite high vertical jump. He is not so tough defender in the ground but he likes to jump for the block shot in the paint. He is of a very good material

New boys out to get Slingers shot at Merlion Cup - by Eurobasket News

After losing back-to-back Asean Basketball League (ABL) Finals, the Singapore Slingers are hoping a pair of potential signings will provide that winning edge. Filipino guard Mikee Reyes and Canadian Ryan Wright (206-C/F-87, college: Oklahoma) have been added to the Slingers' 12-man squad for this month's Merlion Cup, which head coach Neo Beng Siang will use as an audition for the duo. Besides the hosts, the Sept 20-24 invitational tournament at the OCBC Arena features the Shanghai Sharks (China), Adelaide 36ers (Australia), Satria Muda Pertamina (Indonesia), Yulon Luxgen Dinos (Chinese Taipei), Jeonju KCC Egis (South Korea) and NLEX-SCTEX (Philippines). Reyes, 26, averaged 12.1 points and 2.1 assists in his final year at the University of Philippines in 2014 and has played in several semi-professional leagues back home. But it is fellow triallist Wright that Neo is pinning his hopes on. Neo said of the 2.06m centre: "He's quick and athletic, so hopefully this can help our team which plays the running game." With last season's starting centre Justin Howard, 36, out of contract, Neo sees the 30-year-old Wright as an ideal replacement. Wright played in the 2006 National Collegiate Athletic Association finals for the University of California, Los Angeles - albeit in a limited role - and was a starter for Hungarian top division club Szolnoki Olajbanyasz. Neo said: "Our players will feel more confident to have a rim protector." Both Reyes and Wright will arrive in the coming days. Slingers captain Desmond Oh is looking forward to integrating them into the team. He said: "We always do our best to help the imports out, both on and off the court." Added forward Leon Kwek: "After seven seasons, we and Saigon Heat are the only teams that have not won a championship yet. "Hopefully Ryan is going to come in, play at a high level and deliver our first championship."

Kennedy back with Wolf Pack after impressive debut year - by Paul Nilsen

Worcester Wolves are delighted to confirm that Jermel Kennedy (201-F-89, college: Lander, agency: HMS), who impressed in his debut season with the team, will be returning for a second season.

The 6ft 7in forward featured in 41 games for the Wolves last year in the wake of his switch from Spanish team CB Clavijo Logrono, averaging 12.7 points and 7.4 boards per game. With some tough competition from his own teammates, when the Wolves went on a 16-game winning streak, he also won the Molten BBL player of the month for March.

Paul James, Wolves Head Coach, said: 'I'm delighted that we have been able to secure Jermel for another season.

"He was a player that last season, I thought had the qualities to have an impact in the league and help us be a very good team on his way to averaging 12 points and 7 rebounds a game. These are numbers that I fully expect him to improve upon this time around.

'Jermel contributes in many different ways, giving us some great options with his all round game, which I believe is perfect for the BBL.

"He had an outstanding March, which lead to him being awarded Player of the Month, so more of the same would be great. I'm expecting him to have a dominant season having had the experience of the last campaign," added the play-caller.

Worcester Wolves play their first friendly game together as a team away at Bristol Flyers this Saturday 16th September before returning home to the University of Worcester Arena play them on Monday 18th September.

They then play their final friendly against Sheffield Sharks on Friday 22nd September ahead of their first league game against London Lions on Friday 29th September also at the University of Worcester Arena.

Hart signs on the dotted line for Rocks - by Paul Nilsen

Glasgow Rocks have made their tenth signing of the summer after adding Great Britain international Joseph Hart (194-F-93) to the roster.

The 6ft 5in shooting guard featured 41 times for Newcastle in all competitions last season, averaging over 17 minutes per game.

At 24 years of age, Hart already has four years of professional basketball under his belt having spent three seasons in Spain.

His first two spells were with Penas Huesca and ServiGroup Benidorm, but Hart was instrumental in Araberri Basket Club securing the championship in 2015-16, shooting 18 points in the final game to clinch victory in the Play-Offs.

The Southend-born guard also won silverware at Newcastle last season, where they triumphed over the Rocks in the BBL Cup final, before losing to Leicester in the BBL Play-Off Final.

Graduating from Lakehead University in Canada, Hart gained his first full international cap in 2015 against New Zealand and captained Great Britain Under-20s at the European Championships in 2013.

He featured in Rocks colours last Sunday where he scored seven points against USA Select, and is hoping that a fruitful season in Glasgow will lead him back into international reckoning.

'I'm happy to be here in Scotland and am looking forward to playing with the guys on the team," commented Hart.

Coach Garbelotto was delighted to find what he sees as the last piece of the jigsaw and believes that the capture of someone of Joe's calibre presents him with a squad brimming with options.

He stated: 'I am very happy to have secured Joe to play for us this season. He is one of the very best shooters we have in the UK and along with his size and basketball IQ, he is a perfect fit for our team here in Glasgow.

"The players are excited that he is here and we look forward to working with him on a daily basis.'

National Trophy preview - by Dave Ryan

The new Division One season tips off over the weekend with eight of the (now) 13 teams in action.

The action starts on Saturday afternoon when Hemel Storm travel to Leicester Warriors. New Storm coach Robert Youngblood has been busy rebuilding his 2015 Leopards championship winning side with the signings of former Big Cats Courtney Van Beest (198-F-88) and David Ajumobi as well as adding another former Leopard in Lee Greenan. Aside from that - and with no import signings announced, the Storm side is largely built around the roster which made a late run to reach the play-offs last season, defeating Warriors in both league meetings. With Loughbrough Riders the other team in the group, Hemel are probably favourites to progress to the semi-finals, their hopes of progressing have been hit by the withdrawal of London Lituanica which leaves them with no home games in the group stage.

Elsewhere in the midlands, it will be a new-look Lancashire Spinner side who travel to Derby Trailblazers.

Having avoided relegation thanks to a last second basket against Leopards in their final home game, the Spinners have undergone major changes in the summer with a split from Myerscough College -who provided their bench players and where they played the majority of their games - and the appointment of former Plymouth Raiders' coach Jay Marriott as their new play-caller.

But despite that upheaval, Trailblazers' coach Matt Shaw is expecting a tough game: 'There have been a lot of changes in Bury, so it will be interesting to see how their new team is taking shape,' he said. 'Their partnership with Myerscough has ended, so the stream of young talent which we have seen over the last few years may not be so readily available to them. That said, I'm sure they'll be decent, because there are so many good players in the area.

Heading north, Bradford Dragons host newly promoted Team Newcastle University in the latter's top flight debut. The north east team won the Division Two equivalent of the Trophy (the Patrons Cup) last season, and finished runners-up in the league to seal a place in the first division.

Dragons finished seventh in Division One last season, comfortably qualifying for the play-offs with a 14-12 record and will be looking build on a pre-season victory against BBL side Leeds Force.

The weekend's fixtures are completed at Fleming Park where Team Solent Kestrels host Worthing Thunder

Both sides have made significant changes to last season's rosters, and in the case of Worthing, they have a new coach, Daniel Gayle, as well.

'I'm excited to have our first match of the season after last weekend,' Gayle said

Leopards double up on Moyos - by Dave Ryan

ne Moyo just wasn't enough for Leopards, and they have completed their pre-season signings with the addition of David Moyo.
The ??-year-old is the older brother of point guard Kevin who joined the Big Cats from London Lions, and joins the club as part of the threeway link up with University of Hertfordshire and Oaklands College.
Coach Thomas Baker is excited about his latest signing: "signing David strengthens our new partnership with University of Hertfordshire which is in place to help support players in an education focused player pathway" he said.
"He will continue his education at the University of Hertfordshire as he enters his final year of his BSc Computer Science (Networks) degree and he will continue to play for the university team also.
"David is an elite athlete combining quickness and athleticism which makes his an effective perimeter defender whilst being a pass first guard who can be lethal from behind the arc. Having worked with David last year as the men's coach for the University it is great to be able to work with him again this year with Essex Leopards
Moyo is looking forward to linking up with the Big Cats: "I am excited about joining Essex Leopards and being part of a great club and family" he said.
!I know I'm going to learn and improve under coach Baker and Malpass, and from the players they gathered who have played basketball at a higher level. As a student athlete I hope to bridge the gap between the Leopards and University of Hertfordshire to bring over a higher standard of basketball to the university."

Storm to the rescue - by Dave Ryan

Hemel Storm came to Leicester Riders' rescue on Saturday night as the midlands side avoided having to cancel their final pre-season friendly.
Rob Paternsotr's team were due to host Plymouth Raiders but the West Country side were stuck on the M5 after a fatal crash saw the motorway closed and Raiders unable to get to Leicester.
Storm had successfully made it to Leicester and had opened their National Trophy campaign with a 72-60 victory against Warriors, and the majority of their side stayed to face the reigning BBL champions.
David Ajumobi and Courtney van Beest, who led Storm with 19 and 11 points respectively, missed the evening game, and Rider ran out comfortable 94-54 winners.
Eric Robertson (193-G-94, college: Chattanooga) lead the Riders' scoring with 21 points whilst J.R. Holder poured in 20 points of his own. Chuck Duru led Storm with 15 points while Bode Adelulo add 11. 48-year-old Storm coach Robert Youngblood made a five minute cameo appearance against his former club.

Mariesa Greene gets MVP of the Week award for Puerto Rican BSNF - by Eurobasket News

American Mariesa Greene (183-SF-87) had an amazing evening in the last week for league's second-best Morovis and that's her to receive a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for week 1.
The 30-year old had a double-double of 18 points and nineteen rebounds, while her team beat Yauco (#3, 1-1) 68-59. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Morovis is placed at 2nd position in Puerto Rican BSNF. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Morovis won just one (their first) game. It's too early to say anything as the standings can be changed completely after next week. Greene turned to be Morovis' top player in her first season with the team. Barry University graduate has very impressive stats this year. Greene is in league's top in points (8th best: 18.0ppg), rebounds (2nd best: 19.0rpg) and averages solid 7.0bpg and 70.0% FGP.

The second most remarkable performance in last week's games was 27-year old Nigerian forward Atonye Nyingifa (180-F-90) of Manati. Nyingifa impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 23 points and 21 rebounds. Bad luck as Manati was edged by Yauco (1-1) 68-65. The season is still at the very beginning and this lost game may not be such crucial, of course if they start win the games. Let's wait for the next week. Nyingifa is a newcomer at Manati and it seems she did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders. She belongs to the best scorers in the league with 23.0ppg (#2). Her other stats are also decent: 21.0rpg and 4.0apg.

The third best performed player last week was American Tierra Henderson (178-G-87) of Yauco (#3). Henderson showcased her all-around game by recording 21 points, thirteen rebounds (!!!) and five assists in the last week. She was a key player of Yauco, leading her team to a 68-65 win against Manati (#6, 0-1). Yauco needs these victories very badly if they think about getting closer to top teams. Their record at this point is 1 victory and 1 lost game. Henderson has a great season in Puerto Rico. After only 2 games, she made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 22.5ppg (3rd best), rebounds with 12.0rpg (3rd best) and assists with 4.0apg (9th best).

Other top performing players last week:
4. Pamela Rosado (165-PG-86) of Morovis - 21 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists
5. Tayra Melendez (180-G-93) of Aguada - 13 points and 8 rebounds
6. Adily Martucci (173-G-94) of Isabela - 18 points and 8 rebounds
7. Tabytha Wampler (188-F-90) of Aguada - 14 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists
8. Shayra Brown (175-G/F-92) of Isabela - 23 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists
9. Shalonda Winton (180-PF-91) of Carolina - 17 points and 8 rebounds
10. Monique Reid (185-PF-90) of Manati - 21 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists
