The 39-year old player had a double-double of 33 points and 20 rebounds, while his team edged out Al-Ahli (#8, 0-1), the league's bottom-ranked team 82-80. It allowed Al-Hala to take over top position in the Bahrain Premier League. But it's just the very beginning of the season and Al-Hala won just one (their first) game. It's too early to say anything as the standings can be changed completely after next round. It's Woods' second year at Al-Hala and it's hard to imagine this team without him. Former University of Arizona star has very solid stats this year. Woods is league's best scorer averaging so far 33.0ppg. Woods is in league's top in rebounds (3rd best: 20.0rpg) and averages impressive 3.0bpg and 92.3% FGP.

The second best player in last round's games was 26-year old American Antwan Wilkerson (201-F-91) of league's second-best Al-Ittihad. Wilkerson had a very good evening with a double-double of 19 points and 18 rebounds. Of course he led Al-Ittihad to another comfortable win outscoring Samaheej (0-1) 90-56. His team has extremely good start of the season. They won their first game. However the season is at the beginning, so everything can happen. They still may lose their high position in the standings. Wilkerson is a newcomer at Al-Ittihad, but is already one of team's top players.

Third on the list of top players last round was American forward Calvin Godfrey (206-F-90) of Al-Riffa (#6). Godfrey scored 25 points and grabbed sixteen rebounds (!!!). He was a key player of Al-Riffa, leading his team to a 65-50 easy win against Al-Bahrain (#9, 0-1). Al-Riffa has a very good start of the season. But there was just one game played, so it's too early to judge them at this stage. Godfrey also has a very good start of the season with very strong stats. The season just started for Godfrey as he played only first game. But it already looks like he can be team's leader.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Haminn Quantance) of Al-Najma - 10 points, 26 rebounds and 5 assists
5. Aleksandar Maric (211-C-84) of Al-Muharraq - 13 points and 17 rebounds
6. Mile Ilic (215-C-84) of Al-Nweidrat - 20 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists
7. Ashraf Moaweya) of Hidd - 19 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists
8. Hussain Lulu) of Hidd - 32 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists
9. Quinton Doggett (206-F-90) of Al-Ahli - 22 points and 12 rebounds
10. Sidy Sall (206-F) of Al-Bahrain - 21 points, 23 rebounds and 2 assists

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

I have also been training young players and coaching at one of the high schools here in town and I enjoy that a lot.

You are one of countless professional players looking for that next opportunity to showcase your skills. You last played professionally in 2015 in Australia. How tough is it for you not getting the opportunity to play?

Obviously I wish I had been somewhere the last 2 seasons because I really enjoy the competition, but I have used this time to my benefit. I think I am different than the others in my position because I have proven myself with good numbers in a good league in Australia. My work ethic and drive separate me as well, and I truly believe that there aren't many people out there that have the level of discipline and desire that I possess.

It has been 2 years now since you played with the Suncoast Clippers (Australia-QBL) putting up good stats in15 games averaging 17.7ppg, 6.4rpg, 3.7apg, 1.7spg, FGP: 51.1%, 3PT: 31.3%, FT: 80.0%. Do you ever think that maybe that was your last chance? Getting that second chance after that good showing might have opened up doors in your professional career that you had never seen before.

I thought my numbers were solid for my first overseas season, but I am always looking for ways to improve and I always have higher goals. I think in the time that I've been back I have improved quite a bit. I am in great shape, I have gotten stronger, I have improved multiple areas of my skill set, and I've continued to be a student of the game and learn, so I think mentally I have improved as well. I will absolutely be ready for my next opportunity, wherever that may be
.

Some guys make long career's out of playing in one country. Was Australia never an option for you? Even if the money may not have been the best getting a second job is something players usually chose just so they can make a living coupled with keeping their basketball dream alive.

I actually thought that I was headed back to Australia two seasons in a row and had things fall through last minute leaving me with nothing. That was quite frustrating. I would love to go back to Australia but would also be open to playing somewhere new. I am not as concerned with money as a lot of players. I want to be in a good situation with a club that wants to win.

What overall kind of experience was that for you playing in Australia? How do you feel did your game grow in that short time just seeing a new style something you hadn't seen in the States?

I really enjoyed my time in Australia. The living was great and the people were very welcoming. In the 5 months that I was there I thought I improved and learned a lot as a player. I also had the opportunity to coach some young players and help teach them the game, which I really enjoyed.

Did you secure a tape of your sensational 39 point, six rebound, seven assist and six steal game against Bundaberg B? Does a game like this keep your dreams alive and gives you the feeling that you not only can play but also deserve a chance again?

Yes I do have the film of that game. That was an important away game, and we were a bit short handed, so that was a great team win. They had beaten us early in the season so that was great to get back on the right side. I have a high level of confidence in myself and I think that I can put up good numbers for a lot of clubs if given the opportunity. However, most importantly, I think I can help clubs win.

Your definitely a guy that can score, but what other attributes does your game possess?

I am a solid defender and I rebound really well out of the guard spot. I am a good passer and can get my teammates involved. I led my team in efficiency in Australia. I am comfortable playing on or off the ball and I feel I can contribute positively from both positions.

Your also a guy that can also fill the stat sheet, but what do you feel is a hidden strength in your game that doesn't always get noticed right away?

I think my ability to defend is underrated. I am 191 cm, I'm quite strong for my weight, and I am a solid athlete. I also think that I am a much better outside shooter than I am given credit for. That is an area that I have put a lot of work into and I am confident that this will lead to results.

If you had to describe yourself in a few sentences as to why you could help any professional team now how would you go about doing that?

I pride myself on my work ethic and my will to win. I have always, and will always, work as hard as I can. I am a tremendous professional on and off of the court and I lead by example in practice and in games. Most importantly, my main goal is to win basketball games, and my biggest goal is to win a championship. I am uninterested in my personal accomplishments, and I am willing to do whatever is asked of me to accomplish team goals. I am also a great club guy. I like to interact with fans and I am experienced in working with youth teams and players.

You played briefly with the Bowling Green Hornets (CBA) playing 10 games averaging 6.5ppg, 3.2rpg, 1.1apg. Some guys will grind here a few years and get rewarded with a contract. Is your dream big enough to just grind and take a step back to help yourself possibly take a step forward down the line?

I am willing to do whatever I need to do to get to a higher level. I think that I proved in Australia that I belonged at the professional level, and I think I have gotten better consistently my whole career. The time that I had in Bowling Green was solid. It is a different game because you have 12 guys that are all trying to prove themselves to get noticed and take the next step. I have a lot of respect for those guys and I think the CBA does a nice job working to get guys exposure and opportunities.

Who was the toughest player that you ever battled at any level that made it to the NBA?

There are a lot of good players where I live in Lexington, Kentucky, which is where University of Kentucky is located. I have played against numerous NBA guys. In college we played the UK team with Anthony Davis, who is a top 10 player in the world right now. That team had 5 other NBA draft picks. One of those was a guy who I know pretty well, Darius Miller. He had a lot of success in Germany and has played his way back into the NBA which is really great for him. Shelvin Mack is also from Lexington and we played against each other growing up, and then played together in a few tournaments this summer. He has had a very solid NBA career.

If you had to construct your own NBA Rushmore which 4 heads would you chose?

It is tough for me to pick guys that I didn't get to see, so I will just include guys that I have watched a lot personally. I would have to start with Michael Jordan, as he is the greatest of all time in my opinion. I think he was the ultimate competitor, and he was a tremendous winner, which carries a lot of weight in my evaluation. Next up I would have Kobe Bryant. I have heard legendary stories about Kobe's work ethic and he was also a winner. Next I would go with LeBron. Statistically speaking, LeBron is on another level. He has an ability to make guys around him better and he can dominate the game while scoring very efficiently. Last I would put my current favorite, Steph Curry. I am not sure that he is better than everybody that I've put him in front of, but I have a lot of respect for him as a player and as a person. He is a great professional, he's smart, he has a great work ethic, he makes guys around him better, and his only goal is to win, much like myself

. Lebron James failed to win his fourth NBA title and is still three away from Michael Jordan. Where does Lebron stand right now in your opinion in the never ending debate of who is the best of all-time?

When anybody talks about somebody potentially being the best of all time, they are always compared to Jordan. I think Jordan and LeBron are different types of players. I would take Jordan because I think he had a "refuse to lose" mentality and his mental toughness was unbelievable. He was 6-0 in championships, and if he didn't take time off I think he may very well have been 8-0.

There has been criticism of Russell Westbrook to be focusing more on rebounding to help inflate his stats and possibilities of getting triple doubles instead of focusing on his defensive assignments. Do you feel that this is a fair assessment to the player Russell Westbrook?

I think Russ plays as hard as anybody in the league. I never question his will to win. I am also quite impressed with his ability to exert as much effort as he does for as many minutes as he plays every night. He is an athletic machine. I enjoy watching his passion for the game.

How do you summarize the 2017 NBA Draft. What sleepers do you see playing a role in the NBA?

I think this year's draft had a good bit of talent. Being in Lexington I saw a lot of UK's games and I think De'Aaron Fox is really talented. I don't know if you can call him a sleeper being that he was the 5th pick, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being the best player in this draft. In terms of more general sleepers I look for guys with good habits and good skill sets that come from good winning programs. I think Luke Kennard fits this mold for sure.

Where will the journey of the Houston Rockets go this season with Chris Paul and James Harden in the back court. Do they have enough to make a serious run at the title or is something missing?

I respect both players but I am not sure that that combination is the best. I think both players do better with the ball in their hands, though Harden can definitely play off ball. They have nice role players that can score and they have decent depth, but I think the Warriors are still the heavy favorite to win the West. I might also take San Antonio and possibly OKC over the Rockets.

How do you rate the Kyrie Irving-Isaiah Thomas trade? Who got the better deal and which team will profit better in the long run?

If it's possible I think that both teams may have improved. I think the Cavs got a solid replacement for Kyrie, in IT, but their real improvement was in depth and on the defensive end. I think the Celtics got better in terms of getting a big time 1 option, and I think Brad Stevens is a tremendous coach. I will be anxious to see how both teams come together, but I'm not sure that it matters who comes out of the East. As long as the Warriors stay together they are really tough to beat. They are highly talented, high IQ, unselfish, they all play defense, they all buy into their roles, and they are all willing to sacrifice for the team.

What was the last movie that you saw?

In theater, The House. On TV, Shooter.

Thanks Michael for the chat. Here is Michael's contact info: mlstone235@yahoo.com +18598061124

Accra Basketball League elect new executives into office - by Yaw Mintah

Old Executives of the Accra Basketball League will make way for newly elected candidates in the coming days following elections conducted earlier today at the Lebanon House Forecourt in Tudu.

The voting process began at 8:00 GMT and ended at 16:00 GMT with expectations high for the new group of leaders to shake up the stale system in Ghana's premier club basketball division.

Andrew Okoe Bulley has been elected Chairman of the league and will be assisted by Andrew Ackah who beat Aurora Toppar to the seat. Marvell Avadu is the new Secretary General and renowned Coach Emmanuel 'Rubberman' Quaye is the new Organizing Secretary. The Tema Youth head trainer's ascension into an administrative role has been coming for a while.

Bulley replaces Benjamin Baafi as Chairman; Baafi passed away a few months ago after a long battle with illness and doubled as Greater Accra Regional Chairman.
An All Star Game involving several current and retired players will be played on September 14 in his honor; the honorary match has been dubbed 'CAP 7' which represents Baafi's nickname 'Capito' and jersey number in his playing days (7).

However, the elections did not affect games in the ABL Men's Division II as Dunks Knight lost 68-72 to Tudu Galaxy and CYO beat DC Aspirants 75-56.

D'Tigers Narrowly escapes Cote D'Ivoire, 78-77 - by Eurobasket News

Defending champions of the FIBA Afrobasket for Men made their presence known with the victory over Cote D'Ivoire 78-77, but not with a serious fight. An expected-unexpected result it turned out to be, with the notable change of 95% percent of players who brought the championship trophy to Nigeria. Only captain of the team Ikechukwu Diogu (204-C/F-83, college: Arizona St.) returned to represent his country, leaving the former players absent and replaced with new ones. Current head coach of team Nigeria, Alex Nwora led the team all he could, putting the pieces together, came out victorious, but realized that there is a lot to be done. Most experienced player and captain Ikechukwu Diogu finished with 31 points and eight rebounds while Ike Iroegbu came up with 15 points, one rebound, seven assists and three steals. Okaro Akakume scored the decisive shot with 17 seconds remaining at the fourth quarter to turn the table in favour to Nigeria. Fans are looking forward to a better performance for the D'Tigers on their way to reclaiming the trophy. Nigeria would face Mali today.

Marvin Bagley Officially Cleared to Play - by Eurobasket News

Marvin Bagley III (6'6''-F-99) the potential number one pick in the 2018 NBA Draft is officially cleared to play for Duke this upcoming season. Bagley recently reclassified into the class of 2017 and committed to the Blue Devils last month. Bagley immediately elevated Duke to number one in most people's preseason top 25 lists. He is a special talent standing at 6'11 with the fluidity of a talented wing. Bagley has a chance to have a Kevin Durant/ Michael Beasely impact at the college level. While he may not necessarily put up those type of numbers playing on a talent loaded roster in Duke, his impact will certaintly be felt. With Bagley now in tow the Blue Devils will hope to live up to the hype that they couldn't last year. With Trevon Duval giving this team a legitimate point guard this year and the return of a healthy Grayson Allen should make the Blue Devils a legitimate title contender. They will be relying on a ton of freshman in the front and backcourt with few returners to provide guidance. If their talent comes together it has potential for the Blue Devils to have a special year. Most of it comes down to just how special Marvin Bagley III is. If he is all that is expected he might carry this team to a national championship on his way to being selected number one overall.

No. 27 PG Jamie Lewis Decommits From NC State - by Eurobasket News

NC State has lost its sole basketball commitment for the class of 2018: point guard Jamie Lewis. Lewis, a three-star composite recruit who is rated four-stars by 247Sports, is the No. 135 player in the class of 2018. 247's composite rankings also have him at No. 27 among point guards and No. 6 in Georgia. Lewis is a native of Atlanta. Rivals' Eric Bossi reports that he has backed off of his commitment to the Wolfpack. The decommitment puts NC State back on the starting blocks in recruiting for the class of 2018. The Wolfpack, which are now helmed by head coach Kevin Keatts, have two players joining in the class of 2017: four-star point guard Lavar Batts and three-star point guard Braxton Beverly. According to Bossi, State is still in the mix for Lewis. He also holds offers from Baylor, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Virginia, and others.

Buddy Boeheim, the son of legendary Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim , committed to the Orange as a member of the Class of 2018 on Friday. The 6-foot-5 Boeheim elevated himself into a legitimate three-star prospect with his strong play this spring and summer in the Nike EYBL. Spending his senior season at powerhouse Brewster Academy, Buddy has a chance to be a very solid rotation piece for the Orange. Boeheim joins five-star wing forward Darius Bazley in the Syracuse Class of 2018 as this has the makings of a very good class for the Orange. Buddy's commitment also means that Jim Boeheim , now 72 years old, will likely stay to coach his son over the next few years.

Southern Arkansas University Tech Hires New Head Basketball Coach - by Eurobasket News

Southern Arkansas University Tech has announced the hiring of, Marty Levinson , as the new head basketball. SAU Tech plans to enter the world of competitive basketball in fall 2018. Levinson, an avid basketball player, and former high school player, played for Bellevue West in Nebraska and helped lead them to a state championship in 2000. As a player in 2003 for the University of Nebraska Kearney, Levinson was part of the team that was NCAA D2 Regional Champions and Elite 8 qualifiers with a 30-3 record. Levinson has experience at all levels of the game, as an assistant coach, head coach, manager and player. His work history covers positions in California and Nebraska at both high schools and colleges. He earned a Masters of Art in Education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2011 and has lived in California since 2014. Levinson coached Tyrone Criswell who was the NJCAA Division 2 Junior College Player of the Year and in 2002, Levinson was the head coach for Central Community College in California which finished with a record of 26-10 and placed 3rd nationally. Levinson also coached at the University of the Pacific which is a NCAA Division 1 college. Levinson is currently working with the South Sudan basketball team to help them qualify for the 2020 Olympics in head to head qualifying match-ups. When asked what the greatest advantage he sees in coming to SAU Tech to start up competitive basketball teams, Levinson stated that 'I get to take my personal vision and implement it from the ground up. It is an amazing opportunity that most coaches never get. I believe that college basketball is a platform for students to obtain an education and expand their life experiences. It's not just about the game. Winning is great, but seeing students get an education and continue on to successful careers is the best part of it all. The teams I have been on and coached have had success because the participants came together and functioned as a team. It wasn't about one person; it was everyone doing their part. That is what I will work to accomplish with the SAU Tech Rockets. My biggest challenge here in Camden is that I don't have community contacts but I am hoping that will soon change. I am already making contact with the local basketball coaches.' Levinson enjoys playing basketball and spending time with his family. He says he is especially proud that he is an uncle as his brother now has a son and daughter. Dr. Morrison, SAU Tech Chancellor, made this statement with regards to the new athletic endeavor at SAU Tech, 'Students at two-year colleges deserve the right to experience the same things four-year college students experience. Basketball is one of the ways that SAU Tech is providing a complete college experience for its students. Athletics can provide students with a foundation in which to obtain a college education and build leadership skills. We are excited about Coach Levinson and the experience and energy he is already bringing to the college.' Levinson will be spending the fall and spring preparing for the start of Rocket basketball in fall 2018.

D'Tigers Narrowly escapes Cote D'Ivoire, 78-77 - by Eurobasket News

Defending champions of the FIBA Afrobasket for Men made their presence known with the victory over Cote D'Ivoire 78-77, but not with a serious fight. Ginebra makes it seven in a row; Alaska stays alive - by Aris Ignacio

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel continued it winning ways by edging gritty Blackwater Elite, 98-81, to notch its seventh win in a row in the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governor's Cup eliminations at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City last September 8 (Manila time).

Blackwater, through the inspiring play and leadership of import Henry Walker (198-G/F-87, college: Kansas St.), threatened to pull a monumental upset against the league leaders up to halfway of the final period.

But Ginebra dropped a big run that broke the Elite's hopes led by bigman Greg Slaughter (216-C-88), who lead the winners with 22 points and eight rebounds.

The Gin Kings improved to 7-1 while the Elite suffered their fifth loss in nine outings.

Import Justin Brownlee (197-F-88, college: St.John's) added 17 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, four blocks and a steal in 40 minutes of play for Ginebra, while guard LA Tenorio (177-PG-84) chipped in 16 points, five assists, three boards, two steals and a block.

Walker paced the Elite with 26 points, highlighted by six three-pointers most of which were mad in the first half of the game, 17 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block.

In the first game, the Alaska Aces again will live another day by surpassing an undermanned GlobalPort Batang Pier, 101-88, to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive.

The Aces, still in awe with their breakthrough win against the San Miguel Beermen last September 2, gained a breakaway in the latter part of the match to seal their second straight win following a 14-game losing streak dating back to the Commissioner's Cup.

GlobalPort missed the services of Stanley Pringle (184-PG-87, college: Penn St., agency: Pensack Sports), who is mourning the passing of his father in the United States, and the limited production of spitfire guard Terrence Romeo (180-PG-92).

LaDontae Henton (198-F-92, college: Providence) led Alaska with 36 points, 21 boards and four dishes and while forward Calvin Abueva (190-F-88) added 12 markers.

Murphy Holloway (201-F-90, college: Mississippi) scored 25 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and three steals in a losing effort.

GlobalPort (88) - Holloway 25, Anthony 19, Cardona 12, Guinto 10, Cortez 9, Romeo 5, Arana 4, Grey 2, Baracael 2, Celiz 0, Paredes 0.

Quarterscores: 26-18, 46-45, 67-67, 101-88.

Howard Wilkerson gets MVP of the Week award for Uruguayan Ascenso - by Eurobasket News

Experienced American Howard Wilkerson (198-F-84) put on an amazing game in the last round for U Atletica and that's him to receive a Latinbasket.com Ascenso Player of the Week award for round 27.
The 33-year old forward had a double-double of 30 points and fifteen rebounds, while his team beat Verdirrojo (#4, 13-11) 88-80. U Atletica maintains the 9th position in Uruguayan Ascenso. U Atletica is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 11-13 record. In the team's last game Wilkerson had a remarkable 58.3% from 2-point range and got four three-pointers out of 9 attempts. He turned to be U Atletica's top player in his first season with the team. Wofford College graduate has very impressive stats this year. Wilkerson is in league's top in rebounds (9th best: 9.3rpg) and averages solid 53.1% FGP.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 24-year old American guard Gerel Simmons (188-G-93) of Verdirrojo. Simmons impressed basketball fans with 36 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Bad luck as Verdirrojo lost that game 80-88 to the lower-ranked U Atletica (#9, 11-13). Verdirrojo managed to keep the same 4th spot in the standings. His team's 13-11 record is not bad at all. Simmons is a newcomer at Verdirrojo and it seems he did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 28.2ppg (#1). His other stats are also decent: 5.9rpg and 3.1apg.

The third best performed player last round was Joaquin Jones (202-C-97) of Auriblanco (#10). Jones scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds. He was a key player of Auriblanco, leading his team to a 83-75 win against the higher-ranked Sayago (#2, 17-7). The chances of Auriblanco ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 13 games, recording just eleven victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Jones could help Auriblanco to bring them higher in the standings. Jones has a very solid season. In 23 games in Uruguay he scored 12.4ppg. He also has 4.4rpg, 3.4apg and FGP: 61.6%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Facundo Ferreira (192-F-88) of Colon - 18 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists
5. Gaston Semiglia (192-F-91) of U Atletica - 27 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists
6. Paul Harrison (203-C-89) of Sayago - 20 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists
7. Facundo Grolla (196-F-97) of Stockolmo - 16 points, 13 rebounds and 2 assists
8. Nicholas Waddell (200-C-89) of Miramar - 18 points, 14 rebounds and 3 assists
9. Tyronne McNeal (211-C-87) of Marne - 19 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists
10. Daniel Lipatin) of 25 de Agosto - 18 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists
