NCAA1 - Montana Grizzlies add Norwegian point guard Lars Espe  - by Eurobasket News - 8 days ago

Montana head men's basketball coach Travis DeCuire has added depth to the Grizzly backcourt, signing 6-1 point guard Lars Espe (5'11''-PG-98) from the Gimle BBK club in Bergen, Norway, to a National Letter of Intent on Monday. Espe, an 18-year-old, was named Young Player of the Year last season in the BLNO, Norway's premiere professional basketball league. From 2014-2018 he has represented Norway on the international stage, first at the U-16 European-B championships in 2014. In the 2016-2017 season, he captained the Norwegian U-18 national team as well. In two seasons with Gimle BBK, Espe has played in 43 games and made 31 starts, averaging over 15 points per game. A skilled ball handler, Espe has also given out 166 assists in that time, 108 of which came in his 2016-17 season, averaging five per-game. DeCuire will look to Espe to bring that floor leader mentality to Dahlberg Arena. 'We needed someone that can manipulate the defense, get the ball where it needs to be, and also someone that allows Ahmaad to play off the ball a little bit and focus on scoring when we need to do that,' said DeCuire. 'He's a pure point. He definitely knows how to create shots for others, he knows where guys are at, he's got very good court awareness, and I think he'll be special in addition to what we have coming back.' With an average of 27 minutes per game in a professional league, DeCuire says Espe will also bring an on-court experience that is hard to find with prep recruits in the U.S. 'The other thing that's attractive about Lars is that in Norway, he's playing at a professional level. He's playing against grown men. So, for a freshman to come in and be able to play right away for you, sometimes going abroad is a pretty good option just because of the experience.'

NCAA1 - Memphis transfer Keon Clergeot commits to UMass  - by Eurobasket News - 8 days ago

Former Memphis Tigers talent Keon Clergeot (6'1''-G) has committed to the UMass Minutemen, the player told FanRag Sports on Monday. Per NCAA transfer rules, he will have to sit the 2017-18 college basketball season before being eligible for the following campaign. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining. Clergeot averaged just 3.8 points and 9.9 minutes per game as a freshman last season. He would finish his first collegiate season shooting 37 percent from the floor and 31 percent from beyond the arc. He had a season-high 23 points against Incarnate Word in late December. Memphis is entering its second season under Tubby Smith. The Tigers coach has been under a lot of scrutiny this offseason after a handful of players left the program. The Tigers finished last season with an overall record of 19-13. As for UMass, the Minutemen hired Chattanooga's Matt McCall this offseason as the program's new head coach. McCall replaces Derek Kellogg. Kellogg took the Minutemen to the NCAA Tournament during the 2013-14 season, but went 46-51 the following three years. Kellogg was fired by UMass on March 9. He was the head coach of the program for nine seasons. The Minutemen finished the 2016-17 season with an overall record of 15-18.

NCAA1 - Five-star point guard Trevon Duval picks Duke  - by Eurobasket News - 8 days ago

Duke has its point guard. Trevon Duval (6'3''-PG-98), the top point guard in the college basketball recruiting class, picked the Blue Devils on Monday. The 6-3, 190-pound guard, ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect in the class of 2017 by 247Sports, made his announcement on The Players' Tribune. He picked Duke over Arizona, Kansas and Baylor. He is the sixth player, and third in the top 20, to join Duke's incoming freshmen class. Duval fills a need and bolsters a revamped Duke lineup, which has to replace eight scholarship players from its ACC championship team. Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski believes in 'positionless' basketball but Duke could have used more of a traditional playmaker last season. With senior guard Grayson Allen coming back, and top recruits shooting guard Gary Trent and forward Wendell Carter coming in, Duval gives Krzyzewski a quarterback to guide the offense. Duval averaged 16.2 points and 7.7 assists per game for IMG Academdy in Bradenton, Fla. as a high school senior and, like Trent and Carter, was a McDonald's All-American. Duke has made quick work since losing out on wing Kevin Knox (who opted for Kentucky) and then losing freshman guard Frank Jackson to the NBA draft. Four-star wing Jordan Tucker committed on Saturday and Duval followed on Monday. That gives the Blue Devils a potential lineup of Duval, Allen, Trent, Carter and big man Marques Bolden for next season, which will put them among the favorites to the win the ACC.

Very explosve attacking the basket ... Despite a lack of great bulk, shows a willingness to play physical and bang with bigger players inside ... Runs the floor well, good foot speed, a very fluid athlete who plays with boundless energy ... Owns a big wingspan. Plays much bigger than 6-8 ... An excellent rebounder.
Shows some touch on his shot but needs to work on post moves and add range ... Shows some ability to face the basket and use the dribble, but won't be confused for a small forward. Lacks the ball handling, passing ability, and outside shot to play strictly on the perimeter ..
