WNBA - Rumor : Katie Smith to be named next coach of New York Liberty  - by Pierre Ploszajski - 14 hours ago

Logan native and Ohio State product Katie Smith will be the next coach of the New York Liberty, according to media reports.
Smith has been an assistant with the Liberty since she retired as a WNBA player in 2013. She was promoted to associate head coach in 2016.
She takes over for Bill Laimbeer, who served as Liberty coach from 2013-17. He left to become coach and general manager with the San Antonio Stars after they are sold and relocated, other media reports say.
This will be Smith's first head coaching job, but she has been preparing for it.
'I'd like to be a head coach, yes, whether it be in the pros or college, but definitely at some point I'd like to take that challenge on,' Smith told The Dispatch last year. 'I do enjoy it. I enjoy working with the players on the floor, practice, but also scheming, watching film, trying to figure out how we can have success.'
Smith said at the time that she has drawn on experiences with former coaches Nancy Darsch and Brian Agler as well as Laimbeer while growing as a coach. She said she also has taken notes from Geno Auriemma at the University of Connecticut and spent time at Ohio State learning from current coach Kevin McGuff.
The Liberty have finished with the league's third best record the past two seasons, but lost in their opening playoff game each year. They return a solid group led by Tina Charles, Epiphanny Prince and Sugar Rodgers.
The 43-year-old Smith is among a handful of former players to make the jump to head coach. She's also the third coaching hire in the league this offseason, joining Laimbeer and Dan Hughes - who was hired by Seattle. The Atlanta Dream still have an opening.
The 5-foot-11 Smith, a shooting guard, played 14 years in the WNBA after a two-year stint with the Columbus Quest of the American Basketball League in which she led the Quest to championships in each of the league's two seasons. She is fifth on the WNBA scoring list and won two titles with the Detroit Shock, earning finals MVP honors in 2008. Smith also helped the U.S. win three Olympic gold medals.

by Rene Kennedy Oct 13, 2017

WNBA: Laimbeer leaving New York to coach new Las Vegas team according to an Associated Press anonymous source.
Bill Laimbeer is said to be leaving New York to take over as head coach of another WNBA franchise...
With recent news breaking on the San Antonio Stars not only being sold, yet relocating as well to Las Vegas, more news has come out regarding the new coach. According to the Associated Press, Bill Laimbeer will be named the Head Coach of the team, as well as the General Manager.
If Laimbeer does indeed become the new coach and GM of Las Vegas' team (San Antonio), his coaching position at New York will become open.

If the news is confirmed, it would be Bill Laimbeer's 3rd WNBA team after being at the reins of the Detroit Shock (2002-2009) and the New York Liberty (2013-2017) priorly.

Bill Laimbeer is a 3-time WNBA champion, all titles won with the Detroit Shock : 2003, 2006 and 2008.

In the middle of the 2002 WNBA season, Laimbeer took over the head coaching position for the Detroit Shock. A year later he led the franchise to its 1st WNBA championship and was named Coach of the Year. On Sept 9, 2006 Laimbeer led the Shock to their 2nd WNBA championship against the Sacramento Monarchs in five games. Two years later, on October 5, 2008 he led the team to its 3rd league championship in 6 years by defeating the San Antonio Silver Stars. On June 15, 2009, he resigned as head coach of the Detroit Shock.

In 2012, Laimbeer returned to the WNBA to become the head coach and general manager of the New York Liberty. On October 14, 2014 the Liberty parted ways with Laimbeer after 2 seasons, but he was rehired on January 8, 2015, this until this 2017 season.

United Kingdom - Oaklands sign top European prospect in shape of Aliz Varga  - by Paul Nilsen - 11 days ago

Oaklands Wolves have made a big move by adding rising Hungarian star Aliz Varga (183-SF-01) to their 2017-18 roster.
The 6ft 1in forward, joins Oaklands College for academic study and will feature heavily in the WBBL during her debut season. The Budapest native arrives off the back of an exceptional summer of basketball, which started with her lifting the Hungarian U18 national championship with home side Vasas Academy.
The junior international then went on to represent her country in the FIBA U16 Women's European Championships, gaining a silver medal having narrowly missed out in the Final to France.
Varga was a starter for Hungary throughout the championships and led the nation in efficiency, averaging 8 points, 7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game and shooting the ball just shy of 50% from the field.
The versatile forward will be sure to add a new dimension to the Hertfordshire outfit despite only being 16 years old, something Head Coach Lee Ryan is keen to maximise
He said: "Aliz is an exceptional talent and the best part is she is far from the finished article. I look forward to helping her reach her potential during her time with us at Oaklands but equally I'm excited to coach her in the WBBL this season. We have already seen her qualities in the pre-season and its clear that she will be the best player in the county at her age group without doubt.
"She has a maturity beyond her years that comes directly from the level of competition she has already faced in the sport, but to take on a leading role in the WBBL will be a whole new challenge for her to tackle. I am confident she will embrace it and flourish this season."
The lure of being at one of Englands leading player development academies was too good an opportunity to turn down for Varga.
She commented: "It is very different here to Hungary, since at Oaklands we get more opportunity to work on our skills and improve individually, which is very good. I really like how we get to integrate our training with study every day
"It's a great opportunity I had to take. It is difficult to be far from home, but I love my teammates and the seniors are very supportive and help us all to evolve.
"I am looking forward to playing in my age group and working for the chance to play in the WBBL. it is a strong league, I like that there is mix of internationals in the teams which means I can learn about different basketball cultures and how to play against them."
Oaklands will be practicing hard this weekend looking to acclimatise Varga to the team after Durham had to postpone this Sunday's scheduled fixture. The next contest sees the Wolves take on last years champions Sevenoaks Suns when they welcome them to Hertfordshire on Saturday 14th Oct in a 3.45pm tip.

Caledonia Pride are delighted to announce that five Scottish youngsters will join the programme for the upcoming 2017-18 season as Scotland's only female professional basketball franchise stays true to its vision of developing home-grown talent.
Shawnisay Millar (176-PF-00) and Hansine Marshall will return for their second season under Bart Sengers while three new players are set to make their debut this season.
Pollyanna Storie of City of Edinburgh Basketball Club represented the GB U16 Women at this year's European Championships and will continue her club commitments alongside training and playing with Pride. Sian Phillips will continue to represent Boroughmuir Blaze in the SBC while receiving additional development at Pride. Alix Henderson also represented GB this summer with the U18 team in Dublin. Henderson has departed Highland Bears to begin full-time studies at the University of Edinburgh and will train full-time with Pride..
This move to continue the development of young Scottish players has been made possible by the support of sportscotland, the University of Edinburgh and each of the players' representative clubs from across Scotland. The coaching staff at Caledonia Pride are excited to have the opportunity to work with some of Scotland's rising stars as the team get ready to embark on their second season in the WBBL.
The club would like to thank the players, their families and development club for their co-operation and support in this transition and look forward to watching these players thrive on and off court through their involvement with the programme.
Caledonia Pride will begin their season at home this Saturday when they host defending WBBL Champions Nottingham Wildcats at 5pm on the 7th October. Tickets are still available for this game HERE and you still have time to secure your Season Ticket by clicking HERE.
