Regular Season Round 25: S.Antonio SS - New York L. 65-53

Date: July 25, 2013
Danielle Robinson sat on the floor in front of her locker, her back against a chair and ice packs on an assortment of body parts. This has become the guard's postgame pose in recent games, a way to soothe a season's aches. The Silver Stars also appeared to have found a cure for what had hampered them throughout an injury-plagued season — winning. Paced by another strong defensive effort, the Silver Stars won their second in a row by topping New York 65-53 before a season-high 12,086 at the AT&T Center on Thursday. The win was Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes' 200th, making him only the third WNBA coach — Washington's Mike Thibault and former Houston coach Van Chancellor are the others — to reach the milestone. “To be in the company of them, from a coaching standpoint, is very humbling,” Hughes said. “You start thinking about all the great assistant coaches, and you think about the players. The number is one thing, the relationships and what those people have done to you, that's (a) life lesson.” The Silver Stars (6-12) prevailed by limiting the Liberty to 26.7 percent shooting. In their last two outings, their opponents have shot a combined 37 of 132 (28 percent) and averaged 52.5 points. The Silver Stars had allowed 87.4 points in the previous 12 games. “I think we finally found our identity,” said Robinson, who finished with 17 points, six assists and six rebounds. “We have what we have now, and we're going to have to be solid with that. We're buying in, and we're playing hard together.” And they're playing with a purpose. Jayne Appel continued her recent strong rebounding with 13 after grabbing a career-high 18 the previous game. Danielle Adams flirted with a triple-double (20 points, eight rebounds and six steals), and Shameka Christon had 11 points off the bench. “San Antonio came out and played with a lot of energy,” said New York guard Cappie Pondexter, who had 20 points. “They got a lot of great things from different people. Energy-wise, I thought the best team won.” Christon, who entered the game shooting 27.3 percent, made 4-of-10 shots. Her biggest impact came when the Liberty (7-11) pulled within 46-39 with 1:39 left in the third. The 6-foot-2 Christon hit a 3-pointer and blocked a shot as the Silver Stars extended their advantage to 12 going into the final quarter. She hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth, and the Silver Stars led by no less than nine the rest of the way. The Silver Stars led 31-22 at halftime, closing the half on a 10-3 run that saw Liberty coach Bill Laimbeer get ejected with 38 seconds left after he got two technicals arguing a shot-clock violation.
