There was no surprise when 9th ranked Deportivo Valdivia (2-5) was defeated on the road by fourth ranked Universidad de Concepcion (5-2) 95-86. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 23-20. But Deportivo Valdivia won second period 30-28. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Universidad de Concepcion made 28-of-34 charity shots (82.4 percent) during the game, while Deportivo Valdivia only scored twelve points from the stripe. Universidad de Concepcion players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. 27 personal fouls committed by Deportivo Valdivia helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The winners were led by the former international guard Eduardo Marechal (186-85) who scored that evening 18 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists and the former international point guard Evandro Arteaga (178-83) supported him with 27 points. Five Universidad de Concepcion players scored in double figures. Universidad de Concepcion's coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Even a double-double of 40 points (!!!), 13 rebounds and 4 assists by American guard James Hairston (191-85, college: California, PA) did not help to save the game for Deportivo Valdivia. His fellow American import forward Rayshawn Goins (198, college: JMU) added 18 points for the guests. Universidad de Concepcion have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with 4 other teams. Deportivo Valdivia at the other side keeps the ninth position with five games lost. Universidad de Concepcion's next round opponent will be Osorno (#4) at home. Deportivo Valdivia will play against Espanol de Talca (#5) and hope to win that game.
