Dominican Republic accounted for the first victory at the Central American and the Caribbean Games. They held off Costa Rica for 1-1 record in Group B. Ed Santana had 16 points to pace the winning side. Dominican Republic held on to a narrow 3-point lead ten minutes into the game. But they used a 28:8 run in the second period to clear off. The teams traded baskets throughout the third term as Dominican Republic enjoyed a safe 23-point cushion at the final break. Costa Rica cut the distance in the fourth period but could not avoid the second straight defeat at the tournament. Kelvin Pena tossed in 15 points, while Victor Liz and Jack Martinez added 12 points each for the winners. Daniel Simmons responded with 20 points for Costa Rica. Gardener had 17 points in the loss.
