Regular Season Round 42: Boston C. - New York K. 95-101

Date: December 12, 2014
The lowest moment during the first quarter of the Celtics' season had been a lopsided loss to the shorthanded Oklahoma City Thunder. Even without Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, the Thunder had little trouble rolling to a 15-point road win a month ago. Now there is a candidate to replace that loss as the lowest point of this Celtics' season. What happened on Friday night at the TD Garden certainly had all the ingredients to qualify for that distinction. Facing a New York Knicks team in disarray with 10 straight losses and 19 defeats in the last 21 games, the Celtics were handed a 101-95 setback before a crowd of 17,989. It was the Celtics' third straight loss, dropping them to 7-14, and it came against an opponent that is now just 5-20. The Celtics began the week with strong performances against the Washington Wizards, splitting a pair of games, but they have now lost to a pair of fellow sub-.500 team. 'Frustrated right now,' said center Tyler Zeller, who had 19 points and six rebounds. 'Sunday and Monday, we had great games with Washington and we've had two rough ones here. 'We've just kind of get back to doing what we were doing, pushing the pace, playing together and keep building on that.' The Celtics never led after being up, 45-43, late in the second quarter and fell behind by as many as 11 in the third quarter and were down by as many as 15 in the last quarter. Playing without Avery Bradley (illness), the Celtics became even more shorthanded early in the second quarter when Marcus Smart left with a strained left Achilles. '(Dr. Brian) McKeon said he should be relatively quick healing, but he didn't feel comfortable sending him back in tonight,' said coach Brad Stevens of Smart. 'Obviously, he's one of those guys who helps you getting into people and playing aggressive, as does Avery. When those guys aren't available, we've got to make sure we play that way.' Jared Sullinger continued his offensive struggles, going scoreless for the first time since Jan. 30, 2013 when he injured his back and played only four minutes. Rajon Rondo took just three shots and had two points with 10 assists and seven rebounds. The Celtics' starters are now a minus-189 in the three losses this week, according to Comcast SportsNet stat man Dick Lipe. 'I thought they did some good things,' said Stevens of the duo. 'I thought Rondo was looking to make plays and obviously the ball. 'Sully's obviously a really good player who's had a couple of tough games (10 points in the three losses) in a row. The most important thing we can do is encourage them. We certainly need them to be good.' Jeff Green had 28 points and six rebounds to lead the Celtics while Evan Turner, starting in place of Bradley, and Marcus Thornton had 13 each. Carmelo Anthony, who did not play in the Knicks' previous game due to a leg injury, had 22 points and Amar'e Stoudemire added 20. The Celtics cut a 90-75 deficit and got within four in the final minutes with Green scoring 14 fourth-quarter points. But the surge was not enough to get past the Knicks. 'In lulls in the game, we were clearly outplayed and that's too much for us,' said Stevens, whose team now plays the woeful Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. 'The minute you feel sorry for yourself, it's going to snowball on you. You have to earn things. If we don't play well, we won't (win).' Courtesy of: capecodtimes.com
