Regular Season Round 49: Detroit P. - Toronto R. 100-110

Date: December 19, 2014
Jonas Valanciunas led a balanced attack with 17 points and seven rebounds and the Eastern Conference-leading Toronto Raptors won their fifth straight with a 110-100 thumping of the sputtering Detroit Pistons on Friday at The Palace. Valanciunas, the starting center, scored 11 of his points in the third quarter when Toronto, which never led in the first half, outscored Detroit 29-18. Point guard Kyle Lowry supplied 15 points and seven assists for the Raptors (21-6), who were playing a virtual home game as a large contingent of fans crossed the border to cheer them. Point guard Lou Williams added 15 points off the bench, while forward James Johnson had 12 points and eight rebounds. Raptors shooting guard Landry Fields required eight stitches to the back of his head after tumbling head-over-heels midway through the third quarter. Fields, who fell while contesting a shot by Pistons forward Kyle Singler, passed concussion protocols. Point guard Brandon Jennings had 22 points and eight assists to lead the Pistons (5-22), who have lost a single-season, franchise-record 12 straight home games. Shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 18 points and power forward Greg Monroe contributed 17 points and seven rebounds for Detroit. Detroit center Andre Drummond was assessed a flagrant foul with 6:42 remaining for slamming Johnson to the floor. The ensuing altercation led to four technicals but no one was ejected. The Pistons were frustrated by Johnson's thunderous dunk on the previous possession. The Raptors trailed by as much as 11 in the second quarter but rallied to tie it at 52 by halftime. Lowry led them with 11 points despite picking up two early fouls, while Monroe powered for 10 points off the bench for Detroit. Toronto took control in the opening two minutes of the second half, as the Pistons committed four turnovers while the Raptors scored the first six points. The Raptors wound up starting the half with a 26-9 outburst. Lowry gave them their first double-digit lead at 69-59 with a jumper. Valanciunas then heated up, scoring their next seven points, including consecutive putbacks. Forward Patrick Patterson made it a 17-point spread at 78-61 with a transition dunk and Valanciunas finished off his big quarter with another dunk. Courtesy of: wptz.com
