Regular Season Round 76: Sacramento K. - Miami Heat 83-95

Date: January 16, 2015
Before this road trip, there were plenty questions about the Miami Heat. They had lost four of 10 games. Team morale was low. Frustration began to show. And then came this. The Heat closed the five-game trip with a 95-83 victory against the Sacramento Kings Friday at Sleep Train Arena. They finished with a 3-2 record, restoring some hope that things just may turn around. Center Chris Bosh led the way with 30 points and seven rebounds while forward Luol Deng added 25 points, six rebounds and four assists. They now return home with a different outlook after the impressive showing on the West Coast. In a game coach Erik Spoelstra termed as the toughest of the stretch, the Heat put together their best performance in the trip finale. They played their second straight game without guard Dwyane Wade, who was ruled out due to a strained hamstring after the morning shootaround. That left another opportunity for rookie Shabazz Napier to start in the backcourt alongside Mario Chalmers. Napier was the only other Heat player in double-figures, finishing with 12 points and five assists. Forward Chris Andersen was also a late scratch to the lineup because of an undisclosed illness. It provided more opportunity for center Hassan Whiteside, who made his second straight start. Whiteside didn't have the impact as expected against the team that released him two years after drafting him in 2010. With the sting of being cut still on his mind, extra aggression may have contributed to him picking up three first-half fouls. Not much was needed from Whiteside because of Bosh and Deng. Bosh scored 17 in points in the opening half to help the Heat grab a 52-44 lead at halftime. They closed strong by scoring the half's final seven points, carrying the momentum into the break. It was Deng who keyed the Heat after the half. They push the lead to double-digits in third quarter, a stage they normally have struggled throughout the season. Deng scored 12 points in the quarter, including a jumper that opened the second-half scoring. After a pair of Whiteside free throws, Chalmers scored on a driving layup to make it 61-46 with 8 minutes, 25 seconds remaining. That was more than enough cushion to hold off the Kings, who were already at a disadvantage with second-leading scorer Rudy Gay sidelined due to a knee sprain. The Kings got no closer than 63-53 when Derrick Williams hit a layup at the 6:32 mark. Courtesy of: sun-sentinel.com
