Regular Season Round 86: Memphis G. - Orlando M. 103-94
Date: January 26, 2015
The little things are beginning to bother Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger. There is, however, one big consolation even if the Griz aren't executing as well as their coach would like. His name is Zach Randolph. The veteran power forward put together his ninth straight double-double Monday night and the Griz led for all but 26 seconds of their 103-94 victory over the Orlando Magic in FedExForum. Randolph's 24-point, 10-rebound effort also was the 15th straight game in which he has grabbed double-digit rebounds. 'He got loose early, Joerger said. 'He was rolling. The guy's fantastic. He's so good at his craft. Randolph made 8 of 13 shots and all eight free throws. He routinely demoralized the Magic with feathery midrange jump shots, power moves at the rim and putbacks after using his muscle on the offensive glass. 'I feel pretty good, Randolph said after also collecting six assists. 'The jump shot is falling. I'm just being aggressive, trying to make plays. Marc Gasol added 16 points and 10 rebounds to help the Griz (32-12) win their third straight game and seventh in the past eight outings. Orlando (15-33) lost its sixth in a row. Memphis played with a double-digit advantage for most of the final three quarters. Joerger, though, wasn't happy that he had to put his starters back in after their lead dipped to 10 points with 3:23 left in the fourth quarter. The Magic kept attacking the basket and took advantage of the Grizzlies' sloppy play and poor shot selection in the final period. 'I'm a pretty simple guy. I'm just asking them for simple things: to play together and to play hard, Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. 'Defense will give you a chance to win games and compete. The Griz scored just 14 points with five turnovers on 35 percent shooting in the last 12 minutes. 'We didn't execute. We threw the ball all over and we were slow, Joerger said. 'We walked around and (the Magic) got aggressive. They have a great deal of pride. Still, the victory gave the Griz four wins in wrapping up a season-long, five-game home stand. The Griz led 38-33 in the second quarter, then pulled way for good thanks to strong play from the second unit. Memphis had a 20-9 run and entered halftime with a 67-48 lead. Memphis scored its most points of any first half this season. Backup point guard Beno Udrih led the surge by making his first three field goals attempts, including a 3-pointer that gave the Griz their first double-digit lead at 47-37 five minutes into the second period. Udrih finished with 15 points and five assists. 'That group did a really good job in the first half, Joerger said. 'The ball was moving really fluidly and we got in attack mode. Starting point guard Mike Conley couldn't play with his usual aggression and was limited to 22 minutes due to injury. With the Griz already without injured swingman Tony Allen (left ankle sprain), Conley suffered a left wrist sprain. He left the game with 3:28 remaining in the third period. Udrih played the entire fourth quarter. 'We just wanted to rest it. It was painful in the second half, Conley said. 'We'll see how it goes (Tuesday night).
