Regular Season Round 57: Atlanta D. - Connecticut S. 71-57
Date: August 25, 2015
Connecticut coach Anne Donovan had a coffee in her hand just prior to the start of the game in Atlanta Tuesday. The 11:30 a.m. start - done to accommodate schoolchildren from the Atlanta area - meant a little extra caffeine for the Sun coach, but her players could have used it even more. Connecticut sleepwalked its way through the first half of the game at Phillips Arena and lost its fifth straight game, 71-57. 'I think our overall energy, Shekinna Stricklen responded when asked what the Sun could have done differently. 'I know in the first half I didn't really have a lot of energy, so we have to start having more energy from the beginning to the end of a game. The loss dropped Connecticut to 12-15, now 3 games behind Washington for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with seven games to play. 'We are just fighting for our pride right now and we aren't really sure about playoffs, but we just want to leave our mark on the season and play for us, Sun rookie Chelsea Gray said. On Sunday, the Dream set some offensive records for an opponent against the Sun in a 102-92 win. On Tuesday, it was their defense that set new standards for Sun opponents. The Sun made just one first quarter field goal (1-for-13) which marked a franchise low for a quarter, while their five field goals in the first half also set a new mark. At the Mohegan Sun Arena, the request is for fans to stand until Connecticut scores its first points of the game. Fortunately, this one was on the road or there would have been a lot of grumpy fans. Gray (12 points) scored the first basket for the Sun with 3 minutes, 44 seconds left in the first quarter after the Dream had scored the first 10 points. Connecticut stayed in the game at the free throw line where it sank seven-of-eight and had a chance to cut the lead to three. But Gray missed a shot and Atlanta quickly got the ball to Shoni Schimmel who dribbled past both Faris and Jennifer Lacy and launched an off-balance three with six-tenths of a second remaining in the quarter to restore an eight-point Atlanta advantage. Schimmel, who finished with 15 points, also gave the Dream momentum going into halftime when she buried a 3-pointer with three seconds to play to put the Dream up, 33-18, at the break. The Sun made only five of 27 shots (18 percent) in the first half. 'Overall we had a good defensive game, but we couldn't get ourselves together and find a rhythm on offense… even when we had gotten some stops we still couldn't get going, Jasmine Thomas said. The Sun did get back to within 12 points in the second half when Stricklen (15 points) hit the third of her four 3-pointers with 8:26 to play. The Dream countered with six straight points to rob the Sun of any momentum they had hoped to build. 'We kept fighting, we didn't give up and that's a plus… we could've easily given up, but we didn't, Stricklen said. Without Alex Bentley and Alyssa Thomas in the lineup, the Sun bench outscored the starters, 34-23. The Sun have just three home games left, two of them come up this week. They return home for a game with Phoenix at 7 p.m. on Thursday and then host the New York Liberty on Saturday at 7 p.m. Courtesy of: norwichbulletin.com
