Regular Season Round 8: Heidelberg - Trier 82-80

There was a surprise result when twelfth ranked MLP Academics Heidelberg (4-4) edged at home higher ranked Gladiators (4-4) 82-80 on Friday. The hosts trailed by 5 points after three quarters before their 27-20 charge, which allowed them to win the game. MLP Academics Heidelberg forced 19 Gladiators turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. The game was also dominated by American players. The best player for the winners was guard Aaron Thomas (196-91, college: Florida St.) who scored 31 points. Point guard Bryan Smithson (183-85, college: NC-Asheville) chipped in 11 points and 6 assists. Forward Dwayne Evans (198-92, college: St.Louis) produced 26 points and 9 rebounds and power forward Eric Anderson (204-93, college: New Haven) added 14 points and 7 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. MLP Academics Heidelberg moved-up to seventh place, which they share with 5 other teams including defeated Gladiators. MLP Academics Heidelberg will face BV Chemnitz 99 (#7) at home in the next round.
