A very close game took place in Trier between Science City Jena and Gladiators. First ranked Science City Jena (8-1) got a very close victory on the road over 8th ranked Gladiators (4-5). Science City Jena managed to escape with a 2-point win 72-70 on Sunday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. The guests were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Science City Jena made 20-of-26 free shots (76.9 percent) during the game. Americans were the main players on the court. Guard Immanuel McElroy (194-80, college: Cincinnati) nailed 17 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side and guard Wayne Bernard (190-81, college: Davidson) accounted for 18 points and 4 steals (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Forward Dwayne Evans (198-92, college: St.Louis) came up with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists and swingman Brandon Spearman (190-91, college: Hawaii) added 14 points respectively for Gladiators in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Science City Jena have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain first place with 8-1 record. Loser Gladiators dropped to the tenth position with five games lost. They share it with Heidelberg and Baunach. Science City Jena will meet at home Nuernberg (#6) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Gladiators will play against White Wings (#15) in Hanau and hope to secure a win and be promoted back to the BBL just one year after relegation.
