Regular Season Round 9: Leon - Ourense 86-78

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 7th ranked Ourense (1-2) was defeated on the road by eighth ranked Leon (2-2) 86-78 on Saturday. The hosts trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 46-37 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Leon made 25-of-33 free shots (75.8 percent) during the game. They also forced 20 Ourense turnovers and outrebounded them 43-27 including 17 on the offensive glass. Ourense was plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was American forward Trevor Berkeley (198-92, college: Drake) who had a double-double by scoring 19 points and 14 rebounds. His fellow American import forward Wykevin Bazemore (193-93, college: Winston Salem) chipped in 19 points and 5 rebounds. Berkeley is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Five Leon players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was point guard Martin Rodriguez (182-96) who recorded 23 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 8 steals and Dutch center Bob Van Zijverden (212-95) added 15 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks respectively. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Leon moved-up to sixth place in Group A-B, which they share with Grupo Inec Z. Newly promoted Ourense dropped to the eighth position with two games lost. Leon will face higher ranked Naron (#5) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ourense will play against Betanzos and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
