Second Stage Round 1: Mazeikiai - Telsiai 74-77

The most exciting game of round 27 in the NKL took place in Mazeikiai. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of second-best Mazeikiai (21-6) to seventh ranked Telsiai (14-13) 77-74 on Friday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the home team. The guests trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 5-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 77-74. Telsiai forced 22 Mazeikiai turnovers. Strangely Mazeikiai outrebounded Telsiai 34-19 including 24 on the defensive glass. It was a good game for guard Laurynas Kaveckis (190-90) who led his team to a victory with 19 points. Forward Audrius Maneikis (203-84, college: Motlow St. CC) contributed with 16 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Swingman Vytautas Pikalavicius (197-90) answered with a double-double by scoring 11 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists and guard Sarunas Vingelis (192-89) added 13 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Mazeikiai. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Mazeikiai's coach Aloyzas Rudys rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Telsiai moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Zalgiris II. Mazeikiai at the other side keeps the second position with six games lost. Telsiai is looking forward to face higher ranked Vytis (#3) in Sakiai in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Mazeikiai will play on the road against the league's leader Suduva-Mantinga in Marijampole and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
