The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Marinos (10-4) in Puerto La Cruz on Sunday night. Hosts were defeated by eighth ranked Guaiqueries (5-7) 84-77. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 26-15. But Marinos won third quarter 25-21. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Marinos 45-30 including a 31-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Guaiqueries looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The former international center Richard Lugo (209-73, college: St.Francis, NY) had a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Dominican Victor Liz (188-86) chipped in 20 points and 8 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was Spanish center German Gabriel (207-80) with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists and the former international swingman Jose Vargas (195-82, agency: Pro Sports) scored 17 points and 4 assists. Five Guaiqueries and four Marinos players scored in double figures. Guaiqueries maintains eighth position with 5-7 record. Defending champion Marinos still keep top place with four games lost. Guaiqueries are looking forward to face higher ranked Panteras (#6) in Caracas in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Marinos will play on the road against Cocodrilos (#4) in Caracas and are hoping to win this game.
