Regular Season Round 20: Trier - Heidelberg 70-66

Date: January 31, 2016
There was a small surprise in Trier where ninth ranked Gladiators (11-10) beat 7th ranked MLP Academics Heidelberg (10-9) 70-66 on Sunday. MLP Academics Heidelberg was trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 18-13 charge of Gladiators, which allowed them to win the game. Gladiators outrebounded MLP Academics Heidelberg 39-28 including a 39-28 advantage in defensive rebounds. Worth to mention a great performance of center Justin Raffington (206-91, college: Florida Atlantic) who helped to win the game recording 8 points and 15 rebounds and American swingman Brandon Spearman (190-91, college: Hawaii) who added 15 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. Spearman is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Gladiators' coach Marco van den Berg allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American forward Devin White (203-88, college: SUNO) responded with 14 points and 6 rebounds and his fellow American import point guard Bryan Smithson (183-85, college: NC-Asheville) scored 13 points and 5 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Gladiators moved-up to seventh place. MLP Academics Heidelberg at the other side dropped to the eighth position with nine games lost. They share it with Koeln Rh.Stars. Gladiators will meet at home higher ranked Oettinger Rockets Gotha (#4) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. MLP Academics Heidelberg will play against Koeln Rh.Stars (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
