Seventh-ranked Townsville Crocodiles (9-17) made lots of trouble for third ranked Illawarra Hawks (16-11) in Gwynneville on Saturday. Illawarra Hawks managed to secure only seven-point victory 104-97. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 25-22. But Townsville Crocodiles won second period 31-29. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Townsville Crocodiles used huge pressure winning it 18-14 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 8-15. Illawarra Hawks made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. Strangely Townsville Crocodiles outrebounded Illawarra Hawks 46-23 including a 29-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Illawarra Hawks made 8 blocks. The best player for the winners was American-Italian guard Kevin Lisch (188-86, college: St.Louis) who scored 29 points. New Zealand swingman Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin, agency: Duran International) chipped in 28 points. At the other side the best for losing team was power forward Nicholas Kay (205-92, college: Metro St.) who recorded a double-double by scoring 24 points and 15 rebounds and American guard Jordair Jett (188-91, college: St.Louis) added 19 points and 4 assists respectively. Five Townsville Crocodiles players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Illawarra Hawks maintains third position with 16-11 record having just one point less than leader United. Townsville Crocodiles at the other side keep the seventh place with 17 games lost. Illawarra Hawks will face Adelaide 36ers (#5) in Findon in the next round. Townsville Crocodiles will play at home against Cairns Taipans and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
