Regular Season Round 17: La Roda - Gran Canaria 73-65

There was an upset when higher ranked Gran Canaria (6-8) lost on the road to fourteenth ranked La Roda (3-11) 73-65 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Gran Canaria won third quarter 21-8. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. La Roda forced 22 Gran Canaria turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American guard Darin Mency (188-89, college: Merrimack, agency: DTMones) orchestrated the victory by scoring 18 points. Senegalese power forward Michel Diouf (208-90) contributed with 14 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Four La Roda players scored in double figures. Guard Joaquin Portugues (185-95) answered with 22 points and Senegalese forward Mouhamed Barro (205-95) added 13 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Gran Canaria. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Newly promoted La Roda maintains fourteenth place in Group B with 3-11 record. Loser Gran Canaria keeps the eighth position with eight games lost. La Roda will face higher ranked Casvi (#11) in Villaviciosa in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
