Regular Season Round 17: Gijon - Mieres BVM 75-70

There was a surprise result when tenth ranked Gijon (3-7) beat at home 3rd placed Mieres BVM (8-4) 75-70 on Sunday. The hosts trailed by 2 points after three quarters before their 13-6 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Gijon dominated on the defensive end, holding Mieres BVM to just 6 points in fourth quarter. Mieres BVM was plagued by 29 personal fouls down the stretch. Forward Edmundo Martin (204-91) orchestrated the victory by scoring 22 points. Forward Jorge Escapa (198-92) contributed with 12 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. American forward Tim Dezelski (198-90, college: Hillsdale, agency: Duran International) answered with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists and point guard Pedro De La Calle (185-91) added 12 points in the effort for Mieres BVM. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Gijon moved-up to ninth place in Group A-B. Loser Mieres BVM keeps the third position with four games lost. Gijon will face higher ranked Ourense (#6) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Mieres BVM will play against Rosalia and hope to win that game.
