Regular Season Round 25: Gaiteros - Marinos 69-61

Very important is a road loss of second ranked Marinos (14-6) against eighth ranked Gaiteros (7-9) on Saturday night. Visiting Marinos were defeated by Gaiteros in a tough game in Maracaibo 61-69. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Marinos. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 19-6. But Marinos won second period 23-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Gaiteros dominated on the defensive end, holding Marinos to just 6 points in first quarter. They outrebounded Marinos 38-26 including 27 on the defensive glass. American-Dominican guard O'Darien Bassett (189-86, college: Troy) fired 28 points (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) for the winners. American swingman Blake Walker (197-82, college: Portland St., agency: Pro Sports) chipped in 16 points and 6 rebounds. Gaiteros' coach Jorge Arrieta used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The former international swingman Jose Vargas (195-82, agency: Pro Sports) produced 15 points and the former international swingman Oscar Torres (198-76, agency: Interperformances) added 18 points respectively for lost side. Gaiteros moved-up to seventh place. Defending champion Marinos keep the second position with six games lost. Gaiteros will meet league's leader Bucaneros in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Marinos will play against Panteras and hope to secure a win.
