Regular Season Round 26: Asseco - Slask Wroclaw 79-89

There was an upset when higher ranked Asseco (13-13) lost to fourteenth ranked Slask (7-21) in Gdynia 79-89 on Thursday. The game was mostly controlled by Slask. Asseco was better in third quarter 21-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Asseco to just 7 points in first quarter. Slask made 26-of-28 free shots (92.9 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Asseco 38-24 including a 32-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Asseco was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Ukrainian-American forward Denis Ikovlev (200-86, college: Nevada) orchestrated the victory by scoring 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Naturalized Ukrainian Vitaliy Kovalenko (204-84) contributed with 18 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Four Slask players scored in double figures. Guard Filip Matczak (187-93) replied with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) and American point guard Anthony Hickey (180-92, college: Oklahoma St.) added 24 points in the effort for Asseco. Slask maintains fourteenth position with 7-21 record. Asseco lost third consecutive game. They keep the ninth place with 13 games lost. Slask will face higher ranked AZS Koszalin (#10) at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game.
