Regular Season Round 33: Chalons-Reims - Monaco 87-88

Twelfth-ranked Chalons-Reims (14-19) used its home court advantage to challenge first ranked Monaco (26-7) on Saturday. The visitors from Monaco managed to secure only one-point victory 88-87. However their fans expected much easier game. Chalons-Reims trailed by 14 points at halftime and as many as 22 after three quarters before a 39-18 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 87-88 at the end of the game. Monaco looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. 25 personal fouls committed by Chalons-Reims helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for American Jamal Shuler (191-86) who saved his team from a defeat with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Naturalized Polish Aaron Cel (203-87) contributed with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Monaco's coach Zvezdan Mitrovic used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. Swingman Michel Morandais (196-79, college: Colorado) answered with 24 points and 9 rebounds and American forward Deshawn Stephens (203-89, college: San Diego St.) added 15 points and 10 rebounds in the effort for Chalons-Reims. Five Monaco and four Chalons-Reims players scored in double figures. Monaco have an impressive series of eleven victories in a row. Newly promoted Monaco maintains first place with 26-7 record. Chalons-Reims at the other side keeps the twelfth position with 19 games lost. Monaco are looking forward to face Cholet Basket (#15) at home in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Chalons-Reims will play against Limoges CSP Elite and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
