Regular Season Round 24: Atenienses - Gigantes 99-96

The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Gigantes (15-4) in Manati on Thursday night. Visitors were edged by fifth ranked Atenienses (10-8) 99-96. It ended at the same time the eight-game winning streak of Gigantes. Atenienses made 23-of-27 free shots (85.2 percent) during the game. They also forced 20 Gigantes turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Atenienses made 7 blocks. Worth to mention a great performance of Nigeria-American power forward Atonye Nyingifa (180-90, college: UCLA) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 29 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists and American Ashley Shields (180-85, college: SW Tenn.St.CC) who added 29 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) during the contest. Atenienses' coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The best for the losing side was American forward Markel Walker (185-90, college: UCLA) with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 22 rebounds and 6 assists and the former international point guard Jennifer O'Neill (168-90, college: Kentucky) scored 30 points. Five Atenienses and four Gigantes players scored in double figures. Atenienses maintains fifth position with 10-8 record. Defending champion Gigantes still keep top place with four games lost. Atenienses are looking forward to face higher ranked Indias (#3) in Mayaguez in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Gigantes will play on the road against the league's second-placed Montaneras in Morovis and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
