Regular Season Round 5: Cherkasy - Khimik 77-80

The most exciting game of round 5 in the Superleague took place in Cherkasy. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 7th ranked Cherkasy (2-4) to leader Khimik (6-0) 80-77 on Friday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. The guests trailed by 17 points after three quarters before their 25-8 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Cherkasy outrebounded Khimik 50-31 including a 35-23 advantage in defensive rebounds. 26 personal fouls committed by Cherkasy helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was international power forward Viacheslav Petrov (204-94, agency: AproK Sports Group) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists. American point guard Jaime Smith (190-89, college: Al.-Huntsville) chipped in 22 points and 7 assists. Four Khimik players scored in double figures. Center Igor Chumakov (208-90) produced 18 points and 9 rebounds and center Dmytro Skapintsev (211-98) added 6 points and 16 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Cherkasy's coach Maksym Mikhelson rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Khimik have an impressive series of six victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 6-0 record. Cherkasy at the other side keeps the seventh position with four games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
