Regular Season Round 9: United - Breakers 98-74
Date: December 4, 2016
Bottom-ranked United managed to get the third consecutive victory on Sunday night. This time they outleveled seventh-ranked New Zealand Breakers in Melbourne 98-74. It's especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 24-point difference suggests that United is in a good shape to leave the bottom place. They made 30-of-37 free shots (81.1 percent) during the game, while New Zealand Breakers only scored eleven points from the stripe. New Zealand Breakers were plagued by 30 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for American point guard Casper Ware (178-90, college: Long Beach St.) who led his team to a victory with 26 points and 5 rebounds. The former international center David Andersen (213-80) contributed with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Four United players scored in double figures. New Zealand swingman Kirk Penney (196-80, college: Wisconsin, agency: Duran International) answered with 14 points and 5 rebounds and New Zealand guard Corey Webster (188-88, college: Lambuth) added 15 points in the effort for New Zealand Breakers. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. United have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Wildcats. New Zealand Breakers lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the bottom position with eight games lost. United will face league's leader Kings in Sydney in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. New Zealand Breakers will play on the road against Adelaide 36ers (#4) in Findon and hope to win that game.
