Regular Season Round 5: Al Shamal - Al Gharafa 77-93
Date: December 11, 2016
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Doha: Al Gharafa (#2) and Al Shamal (#8). Al Shamal was crushed at home by 16 points 77-93 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by Al Gharafa. Al Shamal was better in third quarter 25-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Al Gharafa won last quarter 28-14. Al Shamal was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was an exceptional evening for American forward Sammy Monroe (198-85, college: Newberry) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 11 rebounds. His fellow American import guard Michael Taylor (186-86, college: Iowa St.) accounted for 31 points and 5 assists for the winning side. Monroe is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. International point guard Boney Watson (183-78, college: Sam Houston St.) came up with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) and American guard Justin Tubbs (190-87, college: E.Tenn.St.) added 18 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists respectively for Al Shamal in the defeat. Four Al Shamal players scored in double figures. Al Gharafa's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Doha El Jaysh.
