Regular Season Round 15: Al Shamal - El Jaysh 88-97
Date: January 1, 2017
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Doha: El Jaysh (#1) and Al Shamal (#7). Al Shamal was defeated at home 88-97 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. The guests were already 14 points ahead at halftime and as many as 17 after three quarters before a 26-18 last quarter charge of Al Shamal cut the lead to 97-88 at the end of the game. El Jaysh made 22-of-29 charity shots (75.9 percent) during the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American power forward Vernon Macklin (208-86, college: Florida) who helped to win the game recording 35 points (!!!), 9 rebounds and 4 blocks and the other American import point guard Dominic James (180-86, college: Marquette) who added 31 points and 6 assists during the contest. Mohamed Haras responded with a double-double by scoring 31 points and 11 rebounds and American guard Tyrone Johnson (190-92, college: S.Carolina) scored 21 points and 5 assists. Four Al Shamal players scored in double figures. El Jaysh (7-0) have an impressive seven-game winning streak. They maintain first position with a perfect record of 7 victories in a row. Al Shamal at the other side dropped to the eighth place with five games lost. El Jaysh's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Doha Al Rayyan.
