Regular Season Round 24: Al Wakrah - Al Gharafa 91-98

Very expected game when 9th ranked Al Wakrah (2-9) lost at home to second ranked Al Gharafa (10-1) 98-91 on Sunday. Al Wakrah trailed by 13 points after 3 quarters before a 26-20 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 91-98 at the end of the game. Al Gharafa looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a good game for American forward Sammy Monroe (198-85, college: Newberry) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists. The other American import swingman Wayne Arnold (193-84, college: Tennessee St.) contributed with 18 points and 9 assists for the winners. Monroe is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. American guard Larry Blair (183-84, college: Liberty) replied with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists and international Emir Mujkic added 20 points and 10 rebounds in the effort for Al Wakrah. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Al Gharafa have an impressive eight-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 10-1 record behind leader El Jaysh. Loser Al Wakrah keeps the ninth place with nine games lost. Al Gharafa's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Doha to the arena Al Arabi.
