Regular Season Round 25: Al Arabi - Al Gharafa 57-80
Date: February 1, 2017
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Doha: Al Gharafa (#2) and Al Arabi (#4). Al Arabi was crushed at home by 23 points 57-80 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. The game was mostly controlled by Al Gharafa. Al Arabi was better in fourth quarter 19-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Al Arabi 46-35 including 33 on the defensive glass. American forward Sammy Monroe (198-85, college: Newberry) nailed 28 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side and his fellow American import swingman Wayne Arnold (193-84, college: Tennessee St.) accounted for 18 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals. Monroe is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Al Gharafa's coach felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American-Ghanian Adamu Saaka (198-88, college: Furman) came up with 22 points and 9 rebounds and Nigerian-American power forward Manny Adako (203-87, college: Northeastern, agency: Court Side) added 9 points and 11 rebounds respectively for Al Arabi in the defeat. Al Gharafa (12-1) have an impressive series of ten victories in a row. They maintain second place having just one point less than leader El Jaysh. Al Arabi at the other side keeps the fourth position with five games lost. Al Gharafa's supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Doha to the arena Al Sadd.
