Regular Season Round 15: Villa Clara - Santiago 63-91

The most surprising game was another loss of top-ranked Villa Clara (13-2) in Santa Clara on Wednesday night. Hosts were rolled over by sixth ranked Santiago (5-9) 91-63. Santiago dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Villa Clara's 32. They outrebounded Villa Clara 31-17 including a 25-7 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a good game for the former international forward Esteban Martinez (192-87) who led his team to a victory with 25 points and 7 rebounds. Point guard Julio Heredia (183-93) contributed with 18 points and 4 assists for the winners. Santiago's coach Lazaro Guibot felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The former international swingman Andy Boffil (190-82) answered with 19 points and international center Yoel Cubillas (204-94) added 9 points and 10 rebounds in the effort for Villa Clara. Santiago moved-up to fifth place. Villa Clara at the other side still keeps top position with two games lost. Santiago are looking forward to face higher ranked Guerreros (#4) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Villa Clara will play against Guantanamo and is hoping to win this game.
