Regular Season Round 24: Valladolid Univ. - Mondragon 65-61

Not a big story in a game when 12th ranked Mondragon (7-14) was defeated on the road by sixth ranked Valladolid Univ. (13-8) 65-61 on Saturday. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Mondragon was trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 19-13 charge of Valladolid Univ., which allowed them to win the game. They also forced 20 Mondragon turnovers and outrebounded them 50-37 including a 16-4 advantage in offensive rebounds. Mondragon was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was forward Axel Castillo (194-88) who had a double-double by scoring 12 points and 14 rebounds. Power forward Alvaro Encinas (202-94) chipped in a double-double by scoring 10 points and 13 rebounds. Valladolid Univ.'s coach used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. At the other side the best for losing team was Andoni Aranzabal (188-91) who recorded 19 points and 6 rebounds and Diosdado Medizabal added 11 points and 9 rebounds respectively. Valladolid Univ. maintains sixth position in Group A-A with 13-8 record. Mondragon lost fifth consecutive game. They dropped to the eleventh place with 14 games lost. Valladolid Univ. will face higher ranked Ardoi (#4) in Zizur Mayor in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Mondragon will play at home against Zarautz Ulacia (#13) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
