Date: March 19, 2017
The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Tel-Aviv: Maccabi T-A (#1) and Hapoel Tel-Aviv (#7). Maccabi T-A (17-6) crushed visiting Hapoel Tel-Aviv (11-12) by 26 points 100-74. The game was mostly controlled by Maccabi T-A. Hapoel Tel-Aviv managed to win fourth quarter 28-23. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Hapoel Tel-Aviv 46-20 including a 32-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. Maccabi T-A looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international point guard Gal Mekel (190-88, college: Wichita St., agency: BeoBasket) who scored 13 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists. Naturalized American forward Joe Alexander (203-86, college: W.Virginia) chipped in 14 points and 7 rebounds. Four Maccabi T-A players scored in double figures. Maccabi T-A's coach Ainars Bagatskis felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Naturalized American power forward Richard Howell (203-90, college: N.Carolina St.) produced 20 points and 6 rebounds and point guard Tamir Blatt (180-97) added 9 points and 5 assists respectively for the guests. Maccabi T-A maintains first place with 17-6 record. Hapoel Tel-Aviv at the other side keeps the seventh position with 12 games lost. Maccabi T-A are looking forward to face league's second-placed Hapoel Holon at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Hapoel Tel-Aviv will play against Maccabi K/G (#12) and is hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident.
