Regular Season Round 16: Panteras - Guaiqueries 88-89

Fifth-ranked Panteras (9-19) gave a tough game to first ranked Guaiqueries (19-11) in Caracas. The visitors from Porlamar managed to secure only one-point victory 89-88. However their fans expected much easier game. Panteras were ahead by 5 points after three quarters before a 26-20 charge of Guaiqueries, which allowed them to win the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. The winners were led by American forward Marcus Melvin (206-82, college: N.Carolina St.) who scored that evening 21 points and 4 assists and the former international swingman Cesar Silva (190-81) supported him with 11 points and 10 assists. Even 28 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists by American Trey Gilder (206-85, college: Northwestern St.) did not help to save the game for Panteras. His fellow American import power forward Anthony Kent (208-83, college: Ball St.) added 13 points and 9 rebounds for lost side. Five Guaiqueries and four Panteras players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Guaiqueries have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 19-11 record. Panteras at the other side keep the fifth place with 19 games lost. Guaiqueries will play against Toros (#4) in Maracay in the next round. Panteras will play on the road against Trotamundos in Valencia and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
