Regular Season Round 16: Marinos - Gaiteros 96-98

Date: May 8, 2017
A very interesting game took place in Puerto La Cruz. It ended with only two-point home defeat of one of their biggest challengers Marinos (11-15) to fifth ranked Gaiteros (7-17) 98-96 on Monday evening. Strangely Marinos outrebounded Gaiteros 49-28 including a 32-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a very good performance for American forward Al Thornton (203-83, college: Florida St.) who helped to win the game recording 37 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds. The other American import point guard Eugene Harris (187-86, college: High Point) contributed with 13 points and 7 assists for the winners. Five Gaiteros players scored in double figures. The former international Michael Carrera (196-93, college: S.Carolina) replied with a double-double by scoring 27 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and American point guard Isaiah Swann (188-85, college: Florida St.) added 27 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (made all of his seven free throws) in the effort for Marinos. Gaiteros maintains fifth position with 7-17 record. Marinos lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the fourth place with 15 games lost. Gaiteros' next round opponent will be higher ranked Gigantes (#3) in Puerto Ordaz and it may be quite challenging game. Marinos will play on the road against the league's second-placed Bucaneros in La Guaira and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
