Date: May 18, 2017
Very significant was Botafogo F.R.'s (#1, 15-5) victory against 3rd placed Joinville (10-8) 88-82. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Joinville. Botafogo F.R. made 17-of-22 charity shots (77.3 percent) during the game. It was an exceptional evening for American guard Wesley Russell (193-93, college: Ohio Christian) who led the winners and scored 31 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. His fellow American import point guard Jamaal Smith (175-85, college: N.Mexico) accounted for 14 points and 5 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) for the winning side. Russell is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Guard Lucas Vezaro (188-96) came up with 24 points and Maxwell Dias (198-91) added 19 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Joinville in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Botafogo F.R. maintains first place with 15-5 record. Joinville at the other side dropped to the fourth position with eight games lost. Botafogo F.R. will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Joinville will play against Santos/Macapa (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
