Regular Season Round 11: Metros STGO - Leones SD 107-82

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Santiago. Second ranked Metros STGO faced 3rd placed Leones SD. Host Metros STGO (9-3) smashed guests from Santo Domingo (6-7) 107-82. It looked good early as Leones SD took a 2-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Metros STGO had a 29-13 second period charge getting the lead and Leones SD was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 82-107. They outrebounded Leones SD 44-30 including a 34-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. Metros STGO shot the lights out from three nailing 13 long-distance shots on high 54.2 percentage. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Leones SD's players. Leones SD was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. American Frank Gaines (191-90, college: IPFW) orchestrated the victory by scoring 31 points. Center Eloy Vargas (211-88, college: Kentucky, agency: Duran International) contributed with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. American swingman Henry Walker (198-87, college: Kansas St.) answered with 15 points and 6 rebounds and naturalized Spanish center Jhonatan Araujo (208-96, agency: Basket Management Solutions) added 15 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Leones SD. Four Metros STGO and five Leones SD players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Metros STGO maintains second place with 9-3 record behind leader Indios SFM. Leones SD lost sixth consecutive game. Defending champion dropped to the fifth position with seven games lost. Metros STGO will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Leones SD will play on the road against Huracanes PP (#4) in Puerto Plata and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
