The biggest surprise of round 1 in Eurocup took place in Istanbul where host Istanbul Uni (1-0) edged Abdullah Gul (0-1) 76-74 on Thursday evening. Abdullah Gul was trailing by 3 points at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 16-12 charge of Istanbul Uni, which allowed them to win the game. American Ifunanya Ibekwe (187-89, college: Arizona) fired a double-double by scoring 24 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Her fellow American import guard Rebekah Gardner (185-90, college: UCLA) chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Four Istanbul Uni players scored in double figures. American-Serbian forward Danielle Page (188-86, college: Nebraska) produced 28 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists and Australian center Marianna Tolo (196-89, agency: ProDep Management) added 24 points and 10 rebounds respectively for lost side. Abdullah Gul will play next round against strong Sleza Wroclaw trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Istanbul Uni will try to continue on its current victory against Basket Gdynia on the road.
