Regular Season Round 9: Chiba Jets - Osaka Evessa 68-84

There was an upset when leader Chiba Jets (6-2) were defeated at home by fifth ranked Osaka Evessa (2-6) 84-68 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Osaka Evessa. Chiba Jets was better in third quarter 19-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Chiba Jets 41-23 including a 30-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Osaka Evessa especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.4 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. American center Greg Smith (208-91, college: Fresno St.) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 12 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and the former international forward Naoya Kumagae (194-90) chipped in 14 points and 4 assists. The best for the losing side was American power forward Gavin Edwards (206-88, college: Connecticut) with 18 points and naturalized American guard Aki Chambers (190-90, college: Cal Merced) scored 14 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Osaka Evessa moved-up to fourth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Chiba Jets dropped to the second position with two games lost. Osaka Evessa will face Shiga L-Stars (#6) on the road in the next round. Chiba Jets will play against the league's second-placed Ryukyu GK (#2) in Okinawa and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
