Regular Season Round 4: Balkan - Akademik PL 85-78

The biggest surprise took place in Botevgrad where host Balkan (3-0) beat league's leader Academik Plovdiv (3-1) 85-78 on Saturday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Academik Plovdiv. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 2 points at the halftime before their 44-35 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Balkan made 24-of-27 free shots (88.9 percent) during the game. American guard Devin Brooks (186-92, college: Creighton) fired 14 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. The other American import guard Brandon Fortenberry (190-90, college: SE Louisiana, agency: BeoBasket) chipped in 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists (made all of his eight free throws). Four Balkan players scored in double figures. The former international Martin Durchev (202-87) produced 19 points and American point guard Shakir Smith (185-92, college: Adams St.) added 20 points respectively for lost side. Balkan have a solid three-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Beroe. Academik Plovdiv at the other side dropped to the third place with one game lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Balkan. Academik Plovdiv will play next round against Levski 2014 trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Balkan will try to continue on its current victory against ninth ranked Spartak Pleven on the road.
