Regular Season Round 5: Maccabi Ashdod - Ironi Nes-Ziona 77-87

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 7th ranked Maccabi Ashdod (2-3) was defeated at home by eighth ranked Ironi Nes-Ziona (2-3) 87-77 on Monday. The game was mostly controlled by Ironi Nes-Ziona. Maccabi Ashdod managed to win third quarter 22-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. American swingman Daequan Cook (196-87, college: Ohio St.) stepped up and scored 22 points for the winners and Golan Gutt (192-94) chipped in 21 points (perfect behind the arc making all six shots !!!). Four Ironi Nes-Ziona players scored in double figures. American power forward David Laury (206-90, college: Iona) responded with 24 points and 7 rebounds and the other American import guard Cameron Long (192-88, college: George Mason, agency: Inception Sports) scored 22 points and 6 assists. Maccabi Ashdod's coach Brad Greenberg rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Ironi Nes-Ziona moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Galil Gilboa and Maccabi Ashdod. Ironi Nes-Ziona will meet league's second-placed Hapoel Jerusalem on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Maccabi Ashdod will play against the league's leader Maccabi T-A (#1) and will have a slim chance for a victory.
