Regular Season Round 9: Panathinaikos - Panathlitikos 50-87

Bottom-ranked Panathinaikos (0-9) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 87-50 loss to tenth ranked Panathlitikos (2-7) in Athens on Saturday evening. The game was mostly controlled by Panathlitikos. Panathinaikos managed to win fourth quarter 22-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Panathinaikos to just 7 points in first quarter. Panathlitikos made 26-of-31 free shots (83.9 percent) during the game. Canadian forward Micaella Riche (188-92, college: Minnesota) stepped up and scored 24 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and forward Antigoni Chairistanidou (188-91) chipped in 11 points and 11 rebounds. The best for the losing side was power forward Chinasa-Cynthia Ezedja (188-0) with 21 points and 9 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and swingman Katerina Tsineke (178-99) scored 8 points and 10 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Panathlitikos maintains tenth place with 2-7 record. Panathinaikos lost their ninth game in a row. They still close the standings with nine games lost. Panathlitikos will meet at home higher ranked Niki Lefkadas (#6) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Panathinaikos will play against Esperides (#7) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
