Regular Season Round 24: CBT Gimnastica - Mondragon 79-81

Everything went according to plan when eleventh ranked Mondragon (7-15) edged 16th ranked CBT Gimnastica (3-19) in Torrelavega 81-79 on Sunday. The guests trailed by 10 points after first quarter, but they rallied back and won the game by 2 points. Strangely CBT Gimnastica outrebounded Mondragon 43-31 including 31 on the defensive glass. It was a good game for American forward Jordan Rutherford (201-95, college: St.Gregory) who led his team to a victory with 23 points. Guard Iker Barbero (192-92) contributed with 11 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Rutherford is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Mondragon players scored in double figures. Mondragon's coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Forward Raul Gonzalez (187-95) replied with 27 points and guard Nicolas Diaz (192-93) added 8 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists in the effort for CBT Gimnastica. Despite that victory Mondragon went down to thirteenth position (Group A-A) due to points difference. CBT Gimnastica lost fifth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keeps the sixteenth place with 19 games lost. Mondragon will face higher ranked Easo (#3) in San Sebastian in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. CBT Gimnastica will play at home against Zarautz (#15) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
