Very predictable result when second ranked Gijon (18-6) beat at home 7th ranked Ponferrada CDP (12-12) 79-75 on Saturday. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Ponferrada CDP won third quarter 14-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The best player for the winners was American swingman James Pegues (198-93, college: Newman) who scored 19 points and 7 rebounds. The other American import point guard Kenny Hatch (180, college: Texas A&M Int.) chipped in 11 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Point guard Marcos Ruiz (181-95) produced 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and swingman Javier Garcia (195-92) added 18 points respectively for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Gijon have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain second position in Group A-B with 18-6 record having just five point less than leader Vic. Loser Ponferrada CDP keeps the seventh place with 12 games lost. Gijon will face Obradoiro II (#13) in Santiago de Comp in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Ponferrada CDP will play at home against Betanzos (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
