Regular Season Round 28: Gijon - Venta de Banos 100-76

There was no surprise when 16th ranked Venta de Banos (5-21) was outplayed on the road by second ranked Gijon (20-6) 100-76 on Saturday. Gijon dominated down low during the game scoring 74 of its points in the paint compared to Venta de Banos' 34. Gijon forced 22 Venta de Banos turnovers and outrebounded them 43-30 including 16 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Malik Wineglass (203, college: Harris-Stowe St.) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 23 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists and the other American import swingman James Pegues (198-93, college: Newman) who added 22 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. Gijon's coach Fran Sanchez felt very confident that he used 10 players saving starting five for next games. At the losing side American forward Davante McCallam (203-91, college: Chadron St.) responded with 26 points and 8 rebounds and swingman Alejandro Young (194-97) scored 13 points and 9 rebounds. Four Venta de Banos players scored in double figures. Gijon have an impressive seven-game winning streak. They maintain second position in Group A-B with 20-6 record having just six point less than leader Vic. Venta de Banos lost eighth consecutive game. They keep the sixteenth place with 21 games lost. Gijon will face Carbajosa (#5) on the road in the next round. Venta de Banos will play against Betanzos (#6) and hope to win that game.
