Quarter-Finals Round 3: Boston C. - Orlando M. 96-117

Date: May 8, 2009
Orlando Magic all-star point guard Jameer Nelson, out with a shoulder injury since February, was on the bench, wearing slacks and a sport coat. His replacement, Rafer Alston, was suspended for smacking someone in the back of the head. And Alston's backup, Anthony Johnson, sat the entire fourth quarter after brushing aside Coach Stan Van Gundy and arguing with him. On top of that, the defending champion Boston Celtics were charging back in the fourth quarter -- cutting a 20-point, second-half deficit to single digits -- and all-star center Dwight Howard was forced to sit early in the period after picking up a silly fifth foul. But while the Magic had a lot of missing pieces, it still had three important elements -- all-star Rashard Lewis, point forward Hidayet Turkoglu, and heart -- which resulted in a 117-96 victory over Boston in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Friday night. Lewis (28 points) and Hidayet Turkoglu (24 points) combined to score 23 in the fourth period, and both exited to standing ovations after they helped their team avoid unraveling as Orlando took a 2-1 lead in this best-of-seven series. Game 4 is Sunday at Amway Arena.
