Regular Season Round 5: Quebradillas - Ponce 89-100

The Ponce Lions playing without import Leon Rodgers last night, defeated the Quebradillas Pirates, 100-89. Rodgers apparently is suffering from a foot injury and they decided to give him some rest. The Pirates had Damon Jones in their lineup, Jones their recently acquired import player came highly regarded as a sharp shooter but he played under 19 minutes and scored 7 points for the Pirates. In the 1st quarter, the Pirates took the lead with 7:18 on the clock, 8-7, and then it was the Lions with consecutive field goals from Lee Nailon, who claimed the lead 15-13 with 3:41 left in the quarter. The game was tied at 20 when Joel Jones scored to end the quarter with the Pirates leading 22-20. In the 2nd quarter, the Pirates would take a 10 point lead 38-28 with 4:45 to go in the half. The Lions however were able to mount an offensive run of their own to cut the Pirates lead to 6 points as the half ended 46-40. In the 3rd quarter the Lions showed a lot of determination and were able to tie the game at 56-56 with 4:46 left in the quarter with a 3 pointer from Alvin Cruz. The lead switch between both teams during the quarter, but the Lions once again took the lead as the quarter came to an end 70-66. In the 4th quarter the Lions started pulling away and with 7:21 left in the game were leading by 10 points, 81-71. The Pirates pressed the Lions but would not be able to seriously make inroads into the Lions lead the rest of the game. For Ponce, Ricardo Melendez scored 24 points while Alvin Cruz scored 20 points and had 7 assists. For Quebradillas, Joel Jones scored 16 points, followed by David Huertas with 13 points. *by Luis Ramirez
